So, the last 6 rounds, I've had the chance of significantly lowering my handicap due to higher scores shot last season... and completely failed. I really thought this would be a great season the way it started out. I was striking the ball great, had several sub-90 rounds, great control with tee shots, etc. Last 6 rounds have been crapola. Don't get me wrong, it's still more fun than working.
Seems on this site, several people are going through the same thing. But after going through my previous scores, it seems like every summer I go through this (which is why I get streaks in my scores that give my opportunities to lower my cap). Any theories?

My game sucks most of the time, so I don't even notice if I'm in a slump.

Some good theories, some good humor.

Ethan, you're point that I was trying to stay on top of the leaderboard may have some validity, except last season I was a bottom feeder and the same thing happened. Regression is also interesting. I found over the last month that my grip hasn't been consistent so then of course I gotta mess with it during a round. I think a lot of it is in over thinking the shot.
Take yesterday for example. I was paired with a couple younger guys in town from Vegas. One of them was only his 2nd time on a golf course and the other one was using borrowed clubs. So for the 1st 9 holes we were duffing our way up to the green which gave me entirely too much time to over think every shot, my tempo felt way off and I ended up topping quite a few shots. I shot a 50 in those first 9 holes. While they were nice guys, I was happy to hear they wrre only playing 9.
Now I'm by myself in a cart with no one in front of me for miles. I figured I've buried my myself already so I'm going to play the last 9 as fast as I could go. Basically, I was just stepping up to the ball, picking a target and pulling the trigger. I still had a couple of doubles, but pulled off 4 bogeies, 2 pars, and a birdie. 42 for the back in 1 hour and 7 minutes. Figured I play pretty good golf if I don't have time to dwell.
Anyway, I'm pretty surprised the number of people here going through the same thing. And basically what I'm taking away is... Take off my skirt, skip more work, eat more bacon... Is that right?

It might be the way you are all dressed. The game will be a lot better if you take your skirts off!!

Weather? humidity? You guys need to man up.

Here's the key: Hit it 300 yards; make lots of GIRs and sink a few putts. Easy game.

Interesting that this summer slump is not the case for me while it is for so many others apparently. Looking at my career top scores, there have been 5 times where on an 18 hole course I've had a round where my differential has been lower than 4.0. They all fall between June 24th and July 30th, and this stretches back to 2012. Of my Top 10, there are those 5, then 2 other rounds which took place in either July or August. So 7 of my 10 lowest 18 hole rounds have come this time of year. The others came in May, March, and somehow January.

I feel like my game tends to drift away around August or September. By then I've gone back to school, have far less chances to play than I did in the summer, my focus drifts towards the NFL, and I admittedly can get a little sick of golf after playing it so much over the summer. I guess July is the point in the year where I've played a fair amount of golf already in the season so there's no chance of rust along with the fact I know what the hell I'm doing, I don't have a ton of other commitments or things to do, and golf is my sole focus.

I haven't played a round in 20 days. 2 back to back 100+ rounds for me was enough fun for the month. I wanted to just sell the garage full of golf stuffs. I realized I need to step away from the course for a few and just work on solid ball striking.

I got a Haack golf net, mowed a 10'x30' section in my backyard down to 1/2" with a push-reel mower, and I've been making bacon strip divots about 3 times a week with all those junk balls I find searching for my own in the woods. I wasn't doing anything between rounds and they just sucked miserably. I can spend 15-20 minutes every day making contact and not have to kill an hour+ driving to the range.

I'm hoping the next round will be close to 80.
