I haven't played a single round since May 2016 due to knee surgery, then having my clubs stolen, then using the insurance money to pay for PT. This year, I have been spending any free time going to Golf Galaxy and swinging in the simulator, going to courses that allow you to test drive clubs, and swinging a driver and a 7 iron I picked up from the Goodwill. Not too mention A LOT of YouTube time rebuilding my swing to compensate for a weaker right leg.
Yesterday, the planets aligned where I had a day off, payday, great weather, and 2 nickels to rub together. So I went to my home course and rented clubs and a cart and bought an 18 hole round. I was thinking I was going to get my grandfather's clubs but they gave me a pretty decent setup.
Ping G LST driver
Ping G 14.5 3 wood
Ping G Max 5-Gap wedge
Ping Karsten Anser Putter
Now, there are obbiously some massive gaps in this setup...mainly, no sand or lob wedges and nothing between theh 3 wood and 5 iron. But I ended up shooting a 91 with 2 birdies, 31 putts, and 8 of 13 fairways hit, so I was over the moon.
My score would have been better but I couldn't seem to overcome the massive offset of the irons so approach shots and Par 3s sucked, and having to use a gap wedge off the green wasn't awesome, though I did chip in from 30 yds for birdie on the 3rd hole.
Some things have definately changed about my game.
Driver no longer slices, maybe a push, but for the most part, really straight, which resulted in 240-270 yd fairways rather than 220 yd slices. Hope that doesn't go away.
I can suddenly hit a 3 wood now, both off the deck and on a tee, I never could before. Hope that doesn't go away.
I can course manage now. Probably because of the bag setup, I was playing more conservatively and thinking out every shot. That felt good.
I can see putting lines much better. Saved more than a few 8-15 footers for birdie, par, and bogey. (To be fair, my home course completely revamped greens during my 1.5 years away. Completely healed and fast.)
I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm ready to come back to the game. I'll be spending this winter building a new bag piece by piece. And with all my Golf Galaxy time, I pretty much know what I want.
Driver: Ping G20 (though that LST has been sticking in my mind, my SS is only 93 mph)
3 wood: Cobra F7 3-4
Hybrids: Cobra F7 2-3, and 3-4
Irons: Ping I200 5-W
Wedges: Callaway MD Forged 50, 54, and 58
Putter: Scotty Futura 6M or Evnroll ER6

mmm those Ping i200 irons with AWT 104g shafts were the second on my list. I went with Mizuno JPX 900 w/ PX LZ 5.5, but either irons would have been great.

Welcome back! Take some pics of the i200 when you acquire them so I can be jealous.
