So some of the courses around here are getting so dry that the ground is cracking bad. There are cracks plenty large for a golf ball to easily fall into and these are areas that are in play - no OB or anything like that. So how would you play/score that? It hasn't happened to me yet this season but has happened to someone I was playing with. You could actually see the ball down in the crack but couldn't reach it to pull it out.

As long as I could Identify my ball, I would play it as unusual ground conditions and take a drop. If you cant identify it the you have to play it as a lost ball.

I'd have to think it would be similar to a ground under repair, and you could take a drop without penalty.

This is correct except it you see your ball go into the crack you don't have to identify it.

Cool thanks! I figured you wouldn't be penalized but wasn't 100%. Its only a matter of time - the cracks just keep getting bigger! Come on rain!!!!!

Back to rule 25 we go, who comes up with this stuff?

25/12 Cracks in Earth
Q. Are cracks in the earth which occur in hot and dry conditions ground under repair? Do the Rules of Golf provide relief?

A. No. However, a player whose ball is in a large crack would be justified in requesting the Committee to declare the crack to be ground under repair, and the Committee would be justified in doing so.

I would seem that you need to stop play, convene a committee, and petition for relief. I think I'd just with the majority and move the dratted thing.

I think you are covered by rule 25-1...

Rule 25 is the relevant passage and refers to "abnormal ground conditions". Abnormal ground conditions are defined as, "any casual water, ground under repair or hole, cast or runway on the course made by a burrowing animal, a reptile or a bird."

Cracks in the ground are none of these and therefore are specifically addressed in the cited decision 25/12

Point being, if your out with some friends just move it and move on. If it's some sort of actual competition, you will need a ruling before just proceeding under 25-1 or you may end up drawing a penalty.

If a golfer falls in one of the cracks and disappears, it's an automatic WD

Only if he doesn't appear in time to continue play.
