How many dimples do your balls have?

Just curious, I saw a Titleist 392 and wondered what the 392 was. I found out that it represents the amount of dimples on the ball. How many dimples do your balls have, and what is the best dimple count to have on your balls?

I counted and believe there are 348 dimples on my golf balls, which are Nike 20XI's. Interestingly enough, half of them measure 0.4 millimeters, while the other half measure 0.5 millimeters.

I do believe the best number of dimples on your ball to have, however, is 356. With 356, you're eliminating any possible chance of the ball carrying too much driver spin (as would be the case with any ball with dimpleage greater than 357), but also maximizing distance without losing accuracy (balls with 355 dimples or less).

I think we need Myth Busters to verify your findings,

Buck... outstanding topic! I really feel that this is the key to many good rounds. I find that the octahedral ball with 392 dimples has a tendency for more drag over the icosahedral ball with 432 dimples. Of course, more drag equals slower play... AND don't get me started on slow play! Does anyone have any stories about slow play????

432 dimples?! You crazy! Having a ball with that many dimples guarantees a loss in at least 1 yard for every club. You can't play a golf ball that could risk that much!

Oh and I have a story about slow play where this one guy was playing so slow that it held me and my group up and we had to wait a really long time to play this one hole so we went up to him and told him to play faster but he said he was going fast and we were actually the ones going slow which made me really mad so I called the marshall over to talk to him but even the marshall didn't do anything which made me even more mad and then the guy in front of us kept on playing slow and we had already played 6 hours by the time we reached the 18th hole where the guy in front hit his tee shot in the water took a mulligan and hit his next shot 5 yards in front of him so he took another mulligan which went out of bounds so he hit another ball that went back in the water and took another mulligan which finally found the fairway but then he went to the porta-potty which sent us over the edge as we hit our tee shots before waiting for the guy to finish his business and by the time he reached the fairway he saw us and yelled at us and I took my iron and hit him in the face and we played the rest of the hole without having to wait.

Then there was this other time when there was an elderly couple playing ahead of me and my friend and they looked like perfectly nice people but they clearly had no idea what people meant by pace of play as they both played from the back tees and took several practice swings before hitting their shot regardless of if it was their 1st shot or their 10th shot on a hole it prompted us to talk to them and they said they'd try and play quicker but they didn't so we were still waiting a heck of a long time which made us really mad and the group behind us mad so the group behind us got mad at us when we pointed at the elderly group but they looked at me like I was crazy and still insisted I was the one holding up play which was extremely frustrating and depressing so I hit my tee ball even though the elderly couple was well within my range and hit the woman straight on the head and killed her which sent me to jail as a result of second degree murder now I'm writing this in prison and regretting the fact I ever played golf do you have any slow play stories like this?

Gotta disagree about the dimples, but I can't believe someone would do that on the golf course. Not a laughing matter when someone gets hit with ball like that. It just ticks me off when you get guys who play so slow it promotes violence.

On another note... I'm trying to hit into a Par 5 one time and fivesome in front of me would not move it along. I had to wait so long that eventually there were 3 groups on the same hole! I could've screamed... I mean... 3 groups. Has anyone had that ever happen to them???

I prefer 365 dimples. Of course every fourth ball needs to have 364. We call it the leap ball. It comes in real handy for a par 3 over a pond.

None. Zero. I mean, screw the dimples really. Who needs 'em?? I just fill a ping-pong ball with sand, sharpie the "Titleist" on it and let it fly. Dimples are soooooo a marketing gimmick.

Just read a great article in Golf Digest about some new innovations in 2014 model golf balls and the fact that the dimple in dimple pattern that Bridgestone developed has added much more launch to the ball. This may be the wave of the future.

Mongo... interested in getting your take on the most popular selling golf ball on Dr. Mulligans site. Have you found that a certain # of dimples are a better seller than the next???

Interested in what other think as well.

For years, the Pro V1 was 392 dimples and the Pro V1X was 332. then in 2013 they reformulated both balls and the Pro V1 is now 352 dimples and the V1X is 328. I feel sorry for the poor guy in quality control that has to check the dimple count on every ball.

Ironically Jay, the Bridgestone ball is NOT the first to use a dimple in dimple design. Top Flite's D2 and Gamer balls have had this dimple in dimple design for many years. The Bidgestone e6 with it's "D in D" pattern is a top 5 selling ball at www.drmulligans.com . Crazy huh? Top Flite comes out with the technology first and they STILL can't sell golf balls to anyone other than weekend 30+ handicap hackers yet Bridgestone somehow steals the idea and runs the race right up there with Titleist.

Ever notice that the cheaper the course's greens fee the crappier the balls you find? So if you ever want Top Flites, just talk a walk around your 50000 round per year muni, you'll practically trip over all the Top Flites.

Not sure about the dimple in a dimple thing but in high school I had a pimple in my dimple. Puberty was no fun, just ask CG.
