Anyone still use a 1-iron?
106 Views    33 Replies    1 Like   I like it!
In the next two weeks I am looking to get a 1-iron to replace my 4-wood. I know that there are some of them at a Special Tee Golf store in either Niles or Boardman over in Ohio, and I am going to put a 1-iron in my bag.

Although few 1-irons are manufactured, does anyone in these forums still use a 1-iron?

Yes i have one and i use it to keep the ball low on windy days or if you just need the ball to stay low.

I'm going to put it in my bag for fun, to join it's brother the 2 iron.

I have one, a Hogan Apex Edge, that I'll put in the bag when I play with my persimmon woods. I take out the lob wedge (I hardly use it anyway) and my set goes driver, 3 wood, 1 iron-SW.

1 irons are great if you get over your fear. They're not really that hard to hit. The sweet spot is in the same spot as it is on any other iron! And once you learn to hit it, you'll have a fairway-seeking missile. The ball comes off with low spin, and works great into a headwind.

I carry a blade 2-iron that can be difficult to hit if my swing isn't on. Great wind club though....

I use my 1 iron quite frequently. I play hickory clubs and my hickory 1 iron is a great club off the tee and equally great for hitting a punch shot under tree cover for those times I find myself deep in trouble.

I do use a 1 iron to keep the door open when I bring stuff in the house.

I don't have a 1 iron, but I have a 2 iron, that I used to crush. Don't carry it in my bag anymore though. :( I need more wedges.

More wedges for me, too, and it makes me hate the 14-club rule because I'd carry a 1- AND a 2-iron if I could. But I can't give up my wedges.

I had a Ping Eye2 1-iron in my bag for three or four seasons, and I LOVED it. For me it proved to be mainly a tee club, and I used it for some occasional punchouts from trees and trouble. I also got fairly good at hitting "stingers" off the tee with it. I swear you can hit that club 250-plus off a tee.

But because it was hard for me to hit off a fairway, I got a 2-iron to go with my Titleist DCI 990 irons when I bought them in 1999 or 2000. That forced me to drop the 1-iron. I still have it, but I haven't hit it in years. I may put a new grip on it and fool around with it on the range just for fun.

i would only carry a 1 iron to avoid being struck by lighting because as they say not even god can hit a 1 iron.

Trevino had a great comment after getting hit by lighting on the course. He was going to carry a one iron next time and hold it up in the sky because as he said even God couldn't hit a one iron.

My 3-iron is back in my bag after a short hiatus, and I'm playing enough now and hitting it so well that I want to drop down to three wedges and put in my 2-iron. It's hard to figure what I would use more.

But no 1-iron. Still, my PingEye2 1-iron is so sweet. I might start putting it in my bag for scrambles.
