As I sit at work dreaming of warm and sunny days, I started to think back about some of the coldest weather I have ever played. I finished a tournament while it was snowing very hard one time. Had to move the snow out of my putting line to finish the last hole. We ended winning because only 3 teams turned in a score card. It was around 25 and windy. Never again.

At an NCCGA tournament at Birdsfoot G.C. near Pittsburgh in march 2014. Real temperature was 8 degrees Fahrenheit with a stiff 20+ mph wind. I don't remember what the wind chill ended up being but it was well below 0. The only thing is remember was thinning a 4 iron and wanting to go home immediately... and that was only the first hole!

January 3, 2015, just last weekend. 28 degrees and everything frozen like a rock because it rained the night before. 10 to 15 MPH winds, windchill in the low teens. Clear and blue skies was beautiful, had a great time.

Today? tee off was 10 degrees finished at 23 degrees and there was this... The only solace in playing in this kind of weather, you dont need a cooler for your beer! |

I've always been a fair weather golfer. Hate the rain, hate the wind, hate the cold ! My teeth are chattering just reading about you guys playing in the cold. When I was growing up and learning to play, I couldn't wait to go out with my Dad, Grandfather, and Uncles the day after Thanksgiving. It was always pretty mild until one year it was right around 40. That was the old men's cut line. We decided to go anyway that day, mainly in part because of my youthful exuberance. I had to bundle up so much I could barely swing. The temp dropped and it started to snow, which lasted for several holes. It is definitely a different experience standing over a putt and watching the snow flakes collect on the ball. I decided then that it was not my cup of "tee". Took me days to warm up from that. Now my cut off point is 50 degrees .... anything colder than that and I am miserable on the course ....

December of 2012 I showed up to play morning team matches when the temp was mid 20's w/ stiff winds and wind chill in low teens. Only 4 of us were there and the course was closed. We went out anyway since we were there. Ground was rock hard and when I hit the #2 green the ball bounced over the flag stick. The temp dropped throughout and we called it a day when one of the guys let go of his 3 wood when he couldn't feel his hands. He ended up going to the hospital to get treated for frost bite.
