OK - suppose you are playing with some friends. One of them hits an errant shot and you start to look for the ball. You find a ball and call over to your buddy and say, "I have one here - what were you playing?"

Your friend replies, "let me see it, nope that's not mine" and then proceeds to pocket the ball.

So here's the rules on finding golf balls etiquett.

1. He who finds the ball gets to keep the ball.
2. He who lost the ball has no claim over found balls unless it was his lost ball.
3. If you are given a ball to examine to determine if it was yours and it is not, you must return the ball to the person who found it.

It should go to the man that found it unless your partner is almost out of balls. That is how I have filled up a few 5 gallon buckets at home. I keep them and use them in my shag bag at home.

I don't keep found balls unless they are the same type I am playing, and in good condition.

it should go to the person who found it not the player in question, but depending on the type of ball like pro v1 or penta tp5 it should go to the better player because of how fast your swing speed has to be, no point on the person who pocketed the keeping it if he cant hit it like should be

I try to avoid picking up the balls that are still rolling

lol, I had this happen the other day, old guy i was playing with was helping me look for a ball, i pulled my approach on a par 5 and we thought it may have hit cart path and bounded towards the practice green. he spots a ball, it ends up being a mint condition PENTA which is my favorite ball but alas i was play ing prov's this day and knew it wasn't mine. When i told him it wasn't mine he was like "sweet, this ball looks brand new!" I wanted to beg him for it! I would have traded him a dozen of the great condition "ROCK" Balls i had found prior for that one ball!

I even toss balls to guys who see them first, even if I'm closest to the ball and pick it up. Considering I must own 600 or 700 golf balls, it's no big deal.

I must say, though, that I find at least 20 or 30 balls a year that are in prime condition for playing. Always amazes me because a good quarter to half of those I find damn near out in the open. Found a ProV1 that hadn't been hit 4 times the other day on the fringe of a green.

Who the hell leaves those lying around?

the guy who duffed his wedge from 100 yards and dropped a 2nd one and still hit it like crap. He then walks up and misplays his original ball from 50 yards then chili dips twice before getting his real ball onto the green. Admist frustration, has now completely forgotten that he hit a 2nd ball up to the green.

It's amazing just how many balls you can find in the woods. Especially on a par three. If the course is empty and I have the time, I have found so many balls that my bag is full and I just dump the rough looking ones close to the green to make any golfers following smile!

if there is a fence lining the hole. I walk the fence and usually can find 4-5 balls about 6 inches from the fence. I usually will get a twig about 6-8 inches long and try to scoop the ball closer to the fence so that I can grab it. I have what some people call sausage fingers, so it is hard to get 2-3 fingers through the fence to grab the balls. I mostly find Pinnacles. I hate playing pinnacles so use them as range balls

I'd like to do that, but I don't mind placing brands I don't play in my shag bag for the practice tee.
