The rarity of the double eagle...

Double eagles are so rare these days.

I remember reading on a golf course website that one weekend golfer had two double eagles in the same year! There have even been some pro golfers who have scored a double eagle. John Daly has done it. John Cook did it twice on the same day when he was an amateur. Andrew Magee did it during the 2000 Phoenix Open.

The closest I came to a double eagle was on the par 5 3rd at Yankee Run. (Although it was nowhere within five feet of the cup...)

Anyone ever get lucky enough on a par 5 and scored a double eagle? If yes, where, on what par 5 hole, and what two clubs did you use?

The first double eagle in professional golf was made by Young Tom Morris in the early 1870's at the Open Championship in Prestwick, Scotland. He recorded the first ever double eagle in professional golf on the very first hole of the tournament, which he won. That victory was one of his 4 British Open Championships that he won all in a row.

The most famous double eagle of all-time was made by Gene Sarazen in the 1935 Masters Tournament. Sarazen was down a couple of shots to Craig Wood (his era's Phil Michelson). Sarazen playing with Walter Hagen knew that he needed to make a move on the field. He fulled out his 4 wood on a par five most dared not to reach in two. Sarazen swung and bam double eagle. He would finish out tied with Craig Wood and would win the play-off the next day.

That double eagle was called "The shot heard round the world" and was the shot that put the Masters Tournament on the map. It would also give Sarazen his final major of the career Grand Slam. That fact was not celebrated, as the Masters was only a year old and not considered a Major until Arnold Palmer coined the 4 professional majors which would make up the Grand Slam in 1960.

I scored a double eagle today. On the par five first hole of Waterford Golf Club. I bombed a drive to the right of the fairway and pitched in for a two. It is a short par five and the only hole I have eagled twice. Only my third eagle ever. The two guys with me did not realize the rarity of the double eagle and were somewhat surprised by the fit I threw over holing the shot. I have yet to hit a hole in one but in all honesty I am glad to have scored the double eagle first.

GREAT DOUBLE EAGLE! are you going too frame that ball?

YES! On Aug.9 2009 Hawaii Prince Golf Club. It was on hole B-3 Par5 534 yards. I had a 299+ drive left side of fairway in first cut of rough. Still very good lie. Pulled a 3 wood and hit it so pure 235 yards to the green. The ball hit the green and rolled to a right break and dropped it the hole for a Double Eagle...What a shot. My friend started yelling, Its in the hole, Its in the hole....Good fun

Lots of golfers make holes-in-one, but few will ever make a double eagle. Great job!

Six or seven years ago, playing the 8th hole at Tidewater in Myrtle Beach, I hit a 3-metal from 235. Landed on the front of the green and rolled right at the pin, and seemed to disappear. Both my wife and I thought it was in. As we rode up to her ball, we could see mine right in front of the hole. The pin was white and the ball had blended in. No double eagle but a tap-in eagle from 1-1/2 inches isn't too hard to take.

Sounds like some guys I play with. Except they actually write a "2" on the card.

The closest I have come was not close enough. My first Eagle was a 4-wood from 220 yds. I did not see the ball go in but my playing partners said that it landed and rolled like a well hit putt.

I actually just got my first one today. Hole 10 at Wyncote golf club. It is in Oxford Pa. It was a 477 yard par 5 . I drove it into the rough to 159 yards away. I hit a nine iron from the rough, it landed on the green, bounced once pass the flag and backed up into the whole. it was a thing of beauty.

Great job man. Congratulations.
