Last Friday, I was playing a par 3 hole with an island green similar to Sawgrass #17. My tee shot bounced on the green and rolled down the right of the green and into the water. I took my shot from the drop zone which was to the left of the green, but off the island. But, my point of entry into the hazard was the right side of the island. Should I have taken a drop from the island essentially on the green on the right side. This didn't seem appropriate, but I'm not sure. What are your thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that drop zones are local rules that supercede the regular rules for dropping in a hazard.

Good question! Island greens normaly don't have a red line indicating a lateral hazzard painted around them. (Like TPC Sawgrass). However, some do have them because maybe the seawall of island is higher than that of the grass, or other reasons. If there is a painted red-line, then its a lateral hazzard from point of entry. No red-line, then yes, back to the drop zone established by the course and local rule.

Drop zones were designed to keep pace.
The drop had it been tournament rules I believe would have been on the right side, but on the other side of the water. You must keep the hazard between you and the hole. |
