After being very dissapointed with a Cobra speed 3 wood, I found an old school Adams Tightlies 3 on Ebay. It has the Bimatrix graphite-steel combo shaft and has 13 degrees loft. I figured what the hay ,it was only 20 bucks.
I went to the range today and was very impressed with the boring trajectory and distance. I have read mixed reviews on the shaft.
Even with the small head, I felt like I could go after it a little harder and at worst a slight, slight miss to the right. Would end up in the right rough at worst on the course.
Old school is cool for this fool!!(ha ha ha)

If you are impressed with it, who cares what the reviews say! Good luck with it.

The Tight Lies woods were (and still are) great golf clubs. That's what put Adams on the map!

Seriously, though, you'll see lots of Tour players playing old fairway woods. Reason is, there hasn't been much to improve on for the past 20 years. Hell, I hit my old persimmon 3 and 5 wood just as well as my newer metal-headed jobs. So don't worry about being "old school." If you hit it well, go for it.

Another one you should look out for in the used bin: those original Taylormade Burner 3 woods. Not the Burner Bubble, I'm talking even older. It's a small, plain steel head with "dimples" on it. You can KILL the ball with those, no joke.

Is the regret the loss of the club or the thought of your brother in law using it?...lol

Your right Goynes. Some were called Tour Cleeks I believe. Strong hitting club.

I have seemed to get new clubs about every 20 years. This year it was time to make another leap. My woods were all Yamaha Boron Graphite heads and shafts, old school size. They were an improvement over the laminate woods that made up my fist set for sure. I was in Germany and ordered the 5 wood from Ralph Maltby. The head was more like one of today's hybrids, very small with a low CG. I have to tell you, I got the Callaway X-22 irons, the X-Hot 3 Wood, and the X 5 wood, and the FTi driver. At first I felt like I could hit any of them blindfolded. Oh man what an improvement, but I was underwhelmed with the distance. It'll go straight and be very playable on off center hits, but when you burn one on the sweet spot look out! My average 3 wood is about 220. That will jack to 255 when all goes to plan. That inconsistency will land you in a lake, in the woods, or bouncing off the clubhouse walls. I slowed down the swing, picked up the consistency, and added value to the fairway wood shots. The bottom line is that golf is 50% techno and 50% art. There is aruably as much weight on feel and "the look" of a club as there is on the guts and how they're constructed. If it feels good, and you get good results, you get the last laugh. Why? Because you're getting the same thing for $20 bucks as some people are for $500. I remember when I could not begin to comprehend spending more on one club than my entire set, bag and all cost....until I dropped my coinage this year. Merry Christmas Shoe! Swing on!

My 3-wood is a 15 year old crappy custom built club and I pray for my kids, world peace and for my 3-wood to outlast me!
