I have an old Walter Hagen Im thinking about reshafting. Little worried about a modern shaft changing the ball flight I get now. I would like to put a 1" over standard S300 Dynamic Gold on it to get a touch more distance. Any thoughts, ideas, cheers, jeers?

If the club was a steel shafted club...go right ahead. Though I don't think a new shaft will get you any distance.

Be careful when tipping a shaft just to add distance. You're talking about a 2-iron here, and any slight mis-hit will result in a serious loss of distance. And the longer the shaft is, the more likely you are to mis-hit it.

You also need to ask a clubfitter to measure you before you do anything to the club. If you tip the shaft, especially by an inch, you will have to have the lie angle changed in order for the club to set up flat on the ground...otherwise, you'd have to set up entirely different just for the 2-iron.

A more sensible option may be to simply strengthen the loft by a degree or two. That way you don't have to mess with the shaft or the lie angle.

Length of the shaft is only one part of the formula for club head speed.
But if you're going that route, you might wish to consider a lighter shaft and keeping the same length.
Changing the length of the club would also change the lie angle. The lie angle would be more up-right ( depending on the set up anywhere from 1-2 degree ), which means difficult to hit the golf ball flush.

True Temper parallel tips S-300 weights 130 gm. raw length before trim. DG Lite weight in at 109 gm. This would increase the club head speed if everything else stays the same.

Another route is to try out the counter weight. http://www.balance-certified.c../
