Maybe I've reached that age (32) where today's music is for the most part just white noise that really has no meaning or innovation. Of course, maybe it's because the stuff I grew up on is beginning to appear on "Classic Rock" radio. So my question is this....what are some bands/artists out there today that are actually worth listening to? Maybe if this forum gets some traffic, we'll all discover some cool new music. I'd say the two bands I am into these days are The Black Keys and The Hold Steady. How about the rest of you?

-BigLucka

PS....Listened to "Main Street" by Bob Seger while I wrote this....

That is awesome music to listen to. Todays music sucks. As a former Party DJ, if it's not some sort of Dance music, or some classic music from the 80's, 90's, it's just tough to listen to today's music. I love music all type, but sometimes it's a bit terrible

I swear, all the dance/hip hop all sounds the same to me these days....the last time I think anyone did anything innovative in that genre was OutKast...and that was more the Andre 3000 stuff.....

Placebo is not new, but not heard very often in the US. Very edgy, reminds me of the Bowie we used to know. Neko Case has a voice that will never be mistaken for "white noise". For a bit of youthful British exuberance try The Subways, not polished but lots of energy. I met them after a show at a small venue in Philly, nice kids, I hope they do well. Butterfly Boucher, another great female voice, and and if you like a bit of an old-timey bluegrass bent I just heard Crooked Still the other day and I think I'm going to like them alot.

I'm in my mid 50's and from time to time have felt the same way. Music was stagnating and all the good songs had been sung. It's just a phase! Try Playlist dot Com, don't know if this link will work but I'll try... http://www.playlist.com/playli.. it's to one of my play lists with some of the above you can check out. Also, Pandora online radio is not too bad. Plag in a few songs you already like and it finds related stuff. Sometimes I get surprised with something I've never heard before.

You talk like your seventy...change the channel and learn some new stuff. I'm 30 and still keep up with the trends. I like all kinds of music; mostly a counrty girl but love rock. Try some Nickelback, Linkin Park, 3 Doors Down, Daughtry. You seem like a David Matthews Band kinda person or even Jason Mraz. Hell even Bon Jovi is still making tunes!

I agree with Lindsey , don't get me wrong , I like a lot of classic rock , but their are a lot of really good rock bands from the 1990's and 2000's that I jam to . Rap does nothing for me .

Did you just say Nickelback? I am now going to curl up into the fetal position.... :-P

I was raised by one of the biggest Bob Dylan fans on the planet, so my taste does sometimes wander back to the 60's and 70's. I mean really, is there a better song than "Simple Man" by Skynyrd?

But seriously, they had the "Classic Rock" station on at my gym one day and they played....wait for it....."Sweet Child O Mine". I never felt so old as when our 19 year old intern told me that she had never heard of "Back to the Future".....

I am a DMB fan, although not as much as I used to be..... And my wife has gotten me into country.... Two of the best concerts I have seen lately have been country.... Keith Urban (with Zac Brown opening) and Brad Paisley (with Miranda Lambert opening) were outstanding, it did not realize those two could shred on the guitar. I am also a big Gary Allan fan...

As far as today's music goes....

- The Black Keys
- The Hold Steady
- Kings of Leon
- The Killers
- Mike Doughty (of Soul Coughing fame)
- The Heavy
- Band of Horses

And I have to admit, I kinda dig Katy Perry....

The problem with todays music is it doesn't really matter how good you can sing all that matters is how marketable you are. Take lady gaga she is known more for doing crazy things and wearing ridiculous outfits than for singing. You can tell someone is not a good singer when they start to have the robot voice effect on a lot of their songs. Don't even get me started on todays country. You have millionaires singing about driving tractors and partying in barns when in actuality they have probably never seen either of those things. I like older country like Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty because A they can actually sing and B their songs tells stories and are not trying to project a "redneck chic" image the way todays "artists" I use that termloosely, do.

Bottom line most musical acts today are not around because of their high level of talent they're around because of their high ability to move products.

I would pay $49.95 to watch Lady Gaga and Snooki fight to the death in the Octagon....

Rocking out to some RHCP.....now they can still bring it.....

I'll give Taylor Swift some credit because she actually writes her own stuff. If I had a daughter, I'd much rather she listen to Taylor Swift than Lady Gaga or Kesha (and I'm not putting the dollar sign in her name because....@#$% her)

Give Gary Allan a listen.....Dude's been through some tough sh*t.....And it shows in his songs. "Life ain't always Beautiful" basically got me through my father's passing last year....that and racking up a few birdies with his Ping putter!

Bottom line most musical acts today are not around because of their high level of talent they're around because of their high ability to move products.

maybe a little over the top, maybe i'm just cranky because there's 4 new inches of snow on the ground which means 4 more inches that have to melt before I get to play golf again. Remind me again why we live in Minnesota.
