Every year, we have to listen to the garbage about a 5th major and the Players Champ and all of this. I just roll my eyes. There are 4 Majors, get over it. But a guy at work just suggested something that makes a lot of sense to me. It'll never happen, but why not remove the PGA and make the Players the 4th Major? Just interesting food for thought.

No! The PGA Championship means much more than the Players for several reasons. First off it was founded in 1916 which far outdates the Players. It is the third oldest major by 18 years.
It also reminds us that professional golfers used to also be PGA teaching professionals...literally giving lessons to amateurs during their off season. Imagine going to Scottsdale in the offseason and getting lessons from Phil Michelson or Florida for Tiger Woods. Allowing PGA Professionals to play in the PGA Championship is a nod to the origin of the PGA...which includes the PGA Tour. |

The 5th Major talk started back in the day when the PGA Tour moved their headquarters up to PonteVedra and decided to over pay the winner of the Players. The course is great but many of the players don't like it because it doesn't set up for any particular type of golfer. The Tour started the 5th Major talk just like they have overhyped the FedEx Cup for the past 5 years.
I've played both the Stadium course and the Dye Valley course and I honestly like the Dye Valley course better. Get rid of the PGA and replace it with the Players and then make the motto "Glory's Last Shot at the 4th Major, which used to be the 5th!" Easy Peasy. |

U.S. Amateur used to be a major, things change. US Amateur is a major for amateurs. One could argue that it hasn't been a major for 100 years...aka same year the PGA Championship started and took its place as a major. The Players is not a major...if it had the flavor of a major I would actually be caring. |
