After laying off all it's Pro's in the summer, Dicks is getting out of the golf business. Shrinking revenues and an overall shrinking industry were their reasons. I believe what really happened is they put most of their eggs in the TaylorMade basket, and TMag is reporting a 27% decline in revenue YTD to their share holders. So maybe the strategy of releasing 47 new drivers every six months is finally catching up to them - and the retailers?

Are they folding all of the Golf Galaxy's as well? Wow...the golf world just took a MAJOR hit!!! I am surprised they didn't just decide to downsize. Right now they have a large footprint. Why not just cut that space down 3/4 and still have clothing (which makes money) and sample clubs? |

Buncha dicks... stores will be closing.... hehe. Great observation Don. Dicks being sucked out of the golf business now is just very bad timing. Shame. |

Is this true? Or is this a joke? That's not all. Adidas is closing down the Adams head office in Texas and consolidating it with the TMAg HQ in Carlsbad. |

Dick's isn't leaving the golf category entirely. They are just reducing the overall size of the segment in their stores. They already did this in the two stores I go to. All equipment and apparel are now in the same footprint that used to be equipment alone.

All equipment and apparel are now in the same footprint that used to be equipment alone. Dicks are shrinking ? Scott, I don't think this is about maximizing the size of Dicks. This is a move that will help them maximize performance of Dicks. I applaud them for trying focus on lasting longer. Inevitably, I think this move will allow Dicks to fill a void and will make the experience there more pleasurable. Customers want Dicks to better connect with them. I think not only will Dicks see more variety of clients, Dicks will see more volume too. It might change the way how they look at Dicks. I'm not a fan of Dicks personally, but at least they are thinking outside the box. |
