My Motto: I play for the sound at the bottom of the cup.

Included with my friendly briefing with fellow players is that I want to finish every hole with the ball in the cup. Whether it's feet or inches away. No gimme's for me.

My reasoning? Think of it this way:
Do you give the basketball player the point just cause he's on the free throw line?
When a football reciever catches the ball 10 yards from the line with nobody around, do you count it as a touchdown?
The NASCAR driver who is a lap ahead, does he get the checkered flag early?

I just think some players forget the goal of the stroke play game. Match Play? You can go ahead and concede my putt. I understand, but I may not concede yours until I know you can make them all because you've been accepting gimme's.

If your willing to give me the putt...I'm gonna take it ;P gladly. I consider myself a streaky putter to say the least. I'm good one day and not so great the next. I've made some crazy putts so if I get it close on the lag putt chances are I'm definately making the next. But if i blow it past, u might want to make me putt, LOL.

WHO wouldn't gimmie this putt????

MARK IT! LOL

I've said it (and seen it) a million times: Golfers who don't hole everything out typically crumble in tournaments. Not charity scrambles but stroke-play tournaments.

Couldn't agree more...our club championship is the biggest example of "good" golfer that regularly accept gimmies and miss 2-3 footers when it counts. They posted some big #s when all their strokes counted.
This isn't a blitz guys play out the hole

I've missed 8-inch putts. I've seen guys miss putts inside a foot all the time.

You watch the pros on tour and you'll see them grinding their backsides off over 2- and 3- and 4-footers. It's part of golf.

There's a group of seniors that play at one of my home courses who haven't seen a ball go in a hole in 15 years. True story. And they must play 18 holes in about an hour and 20 minutes. Pretty funny to watch. When I see them coming from behind me, I get the hell out the way ... you can feel the breeze as they go by. :)

Hale Irwin has twice missed putts on lip because he was upset, one of those times he settled down enough to bounce back. Putting can wreck a nice afternoon walk on the golf course. I have a friend that doesn't wait for some one to say pick it up he just does it. Cannot believe any score he says he gets, so, that is sad. Good Luck with all your putting games. wileyC

It bugs me too when people don't hole out. As for the poster who says pick it up any time you want, I hope you are not tracking a handicap... because otherwise it's fairly bogus.

True story: about a month ago, in my club tournament, I had already stunk up a hole with 2 balls in the hazard, so get on the green in 5 (of this par 4), after 2 putts I am now about 6 inches away, just above the hole. The green has a lot of slope and I am pretty frustrated by that point. I get careless and make that rake move for my third putt, thinking it's in the hole, right? Nope! And that send the ball so far down the hill that I didn't make the comeback... Add one more putt, for a total of 5 putts and a 10 on the card! Who the f... five-putts? :) Of course, I was rattled enough after that that I sent the next one OB and carded a 9 on the following par 5... The rest was uneventful... Oh well, I had blown the round by then.

So who says a little putt is nothing, a gimmie? Not me, not anymore, at least.

If your not in a tournament or playing for money and your just playing for your own score, WHO CARES WHAT SOMEONE ELSE SAYS, its your score, if you want to pick it up, pick it up, even if your at the 150 marker, if you want pick it up, pick it up.

LMAO! thanks :) I have many times...I have said screw this hole once right after I teed off.

I have missed a putt inside of 2 feet. To me any putt could be missed. Putt them all.

That is what makes golf a fun game. There is no absolute answer, it is all based circumstances and judgment. Good people going head to head with respect for each other and the game. I believe it is good sportsmanship to concede a putt (inside the leather) when you have already won the hole. A pickup because a player are already at max is not conceding putt, that is mercy. In stroke play, it is a different game and conceding even a short putt could mean a stroke that might make the difference at the end of the round! In my humble opinion, it all has to be fun and to be fun, it has to be played according to the rules and the spirit of the game. Enjoy and don't expect me to give you a putt for birdie, a par or for the win!

If some one is putting for a 10, I think its ok to pick it up inside the leather

I think if they are putting for a 10 they should have picked it up a few shots back. That high of a score any thing on the green is good. lol

I don't have a problem with it at all. You can do whatever you please.

My point is that players who never putt out choke all over themselves when they have to. If you never have to, then ultimately it doesn't matter.
