Asking "What do you lie?"

I was wondering if its standard practice to announce how many strokes you've taken when you walk onto the green at every hole. We usually ask each other "What do you lie" as we reach the green.

Today on a par 4 we had a player who was lying 5 on the green but did not declare his strokes. The rest of us assumed he was on in 3. If we had known that he was already 5 strokes down we would have putted differently.

How does it work on Tour? Are players obliged to declare what they lie when they reach the putting green? What about amateur tournament rules?

Ok, for 15 bucks a hole I am going to be asking everyone what they lie and writing it on a score card each hole. That is 270.00 and I would guess there are other segments to give a big loser a chance to get even??

We play about 12-14 holes during the week so its more like 180 for a complete rout but that's never happened. I think the most we've ever collected or paid up is about 140. We usually end up winning or losing about 20-30 bucks. Sometimes its dead even.

For the last hole we offer the losing 2 ball a BUY which we calculate in the following manner: (Assume the score is 9-3)

1. Subtract the scores (9-3= 6)
2. Take away 1 from the difference (6-1 = 5)
3. Half the result (5 / 2 = 2.5)
4. Multiply the result with 15 (2.5 x 15 = 37.5)
5. Add 1 hole back to the amount (37.5 + 15 = 52.5)
6. The BUY = 50 (rounded up or down)

7. If the losing two ball do not BUY then they pay (9-3) 6 x15 = 90
8. If they BUY and win the last hole they pay 90 - 50 = 40
9. If they BUY and lose the last hole they pay 90 + 50 = 140

I think Einsteins theory of relativity is hidden in there somewhere!! That's some serious golf!!

The only time I ever announce a thing concerning my score is if I make something over par or if somebody asks -- and that is always AFTER the hole.

I've never heard anybody tell me what they lie, nor have I told anybody. However, I've also not played an official match-play event. I'm sure I'd be asked and I would want to ask what somebody likes occasionally.

In general, though, I don't have to ask; I already know. And the players playing with me know what I like, so they don't have to ask.

Robert, just curious. Are you posting from a computer or smart-phone which auto-corrects words? I know you the difference between "lie" and "like", which appeared twice in your post. I had this problem with my Droid X until I found out how to shut the damned feature off. It was maddening. You had to re-spell the word you were actually trying to write three times before it would accept it.

Ha ... just a good old-fashioned typo. I think my fingers automatically type "like" on their own.

LOL! Well its a calculation made to ensure that the winner still wins something and limits the the losers losses.

Like I said earlier this is an example of a max win. We usually win/lose 10-20 bucks.

If I'm playing with a stranger I will never ask how many strokes he's taken.

When playing with my regular group I can guarantee you we already know how many strokes each other has taken because of how competitive we are with each other.

I often come out in the afternoons if I just work the morning, and I play with strangers. I never ask what they lie, but when on the green I will ask "Was that par?". That's all I ever ask. They usually entail it with how the ventured the entire hole unfortunately.. lol but, when I play with members I play with on a daily basis, we all know who is doing what, we never ask unless we all are unsure.

That is all for stroke play. And I have never seen a rule for it in stroke play, but remember Kevin Nah called that extra stroke on himself that only he knew about. I think instead of 15 on the hole he was 16 on that hole (or something to the extent).

I used to play with a guy who would take three shots to get to my tee shot...Then ask me what I lie as I'm addressing the ball...Amazed to this day and that was 20 years ago - thanks for picking that scab...
