Some videos to refresh the minds a bit ...

From the Scottish Open 2013
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v..

And at the 2013 Deutsche Bank Championship ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v..

Both these are just ridiculous shots. In both Phil absolutely thumps the wedge into ground first to absolutely dead spin the ball (specially in the Scottish Open). I know its Phil and all but does anyone have idea on what Roger Cleveland has done with those Mac Daddy Wedges that allows Phil to do this?

You still managed to miss one. :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.. I don't know about the wedges, but unless I'm mistaking Phil for Tiger, he plays one of the highest spinning balls of anyone on Tour, which helps allow him to do things like that.

Phil actually plays a distance ball now (Callaway Chrome +) and has been really sucessful since switching to it from the Hex Black Tour earlier in the year. As for the wedges, they have 5 degree milled walls in each groove which is the USGA legal limit for sharpness. They also have various groove width and spacings depending on the stamped loft of each wedge to optimize spin.

I am switching to the Mack Daddy 2 wedges in November when the next release comes out. Going to put a 54 and 60 in the bag.

I had that one but did not mention it because it wasn't the kind of shot I was talking about. Still its ridiculous how good his wedge play is when it's on!

I think its the wedges that are letting him trust his shot that much more.

That would be nice! What bounce would you use? I think I heard that Phil was a zero bounce on one his wedges - was wondering if that was what allows him to hit the ground that hard. You can hear the thump in the Deutsche Bank clip.

I'm sure Phil's wedges and ball are 'optimized' for his game, but none of that should detract from the skill of the player. Phil's wedge play is incredible in both it's breadth and precision. Is there any short game shot imaginable that this guy hasn't practiced and perfected?

Mark I would not take anything away from Phil at all.
However Lefty is playing some of the shots of his career this season.

Phils short game is amazing to watch! I catch myself watching the trick shot that he does over his head on YouTube over and over hahaha
