I am a low 90's and an occasional high 80's golfer. I am 45 and have had a hip replacement. I currently hit my 6 iron only 150 but sometimes a bit farther.
My clubs are knock off Calloway Steel Heads. I recently went into a Sports Authority and tried some Taylormade burner plus and superlaunch irons and I loved the feel of both irons. I am hesitant to spend too much so I am very happy with yesterdays products but when I tried to question a local shop what model was right for me he felt that the Superlaunch and burners are more for beginners than a mid handicapper. I think he was just trying to sell me the 2.0's. My question is this. Are the burner and superlaunch irons more for beginners? |

Both the Burner Plus and Superlaunch (which replaced the Burner Plus in Taylormades line up) are over sized cavity backs with fairly wide soles and a decent amount of offset. Yes these are features traditionaly aimed towards the higher handicaper. But if you like the way they feel that is the most important thing. I wouldn't worry too much about what a salesmen tells you, he's probably looking to pad his commision check by selling you the more expensive 2.0's. If you like the Pluses or the Superlaunch you will have confidence in them. I'm guessing with the hip replacement you have lot some swing speed and both of those sets would suit you perfectly, they are designed to launch the ball high and carry far even at lower swing speeds.

Well, did you try the Burner 2.0's? If you did and you didn't get as good or better results over the plus and superlaunch, go with your gut on those two. I changed all my irons out early last year to Burner 09's, and I love them. My game right now is not anything retail therapy will solve (except maybe in my 3 Hyrbrid which I probably need to change out). Equipment-wise, I am fine tuned enough until swing changes (or age) dictates something else.

just make sure you're comparing apples to apples when it comes to the Burners. The selling point is that you can hit the Burner 6 iron further than your current 6 iron. However, the Burner 6 iron has the loft of most 5 irons. I must say though, I chose R7 TP's over Callaway X20's with Project X shafts. They just felt better.

Hmm, only checked two 6 irons, pings and mizuno which had 35 and 31 degrees loft compared to the burner 2.0 at 27 degrees loft. |
