I saw these Almost Golf practice balls at the store today and was intrigued. They seem to be heavier and more true than those foam or wiffle types. The package says "neighborhood safe" but I'm not so sure they won't break a window.

Anybody ever tried these and if so are they any good?

I may be wrong, but i have read that balls labeled"practice" are totally legal.

I'm not looking at them for real play but just to hit wedge shots in the backyard they seem to be some type of hard foam or plastic and I just want to know if I miss wll it break a window regardless of the "neighborhood safe" claim on the box.

Yes! Buy them!

I have used them for years. They are great for practicing around the house or the neighborhood. They fly much like a golf ball, just slower and nowhere near as far. But they do give you a very good feel for how you hit a shot. I use them specifically to practice tight lies by hitting them off the sidewalk. I have worn out two sand irons and have started on my third hitting them off the sidewalk. I hit them from my driveway across the street into my neighbor's front yard. Then I go over there and hit them back but I do it from the street so that I don't leave the scuff marks on their sidewalk. I take my sand iron and a couple of balls whenever I go to the mailbox. I hit them from a particular spot towards the mailbox and hit them from a particular spot near the mailbox back towards the house.

I also practice getting the ball up quickly by hitting them over the house or garage. I work on chipping in the front yard by chipping from the sidewalk under the trees towards the house.

You cannot break a window with the "almost golf" balls.

I also work on my fairway woods by playing the balls off a piece of carpet. I can hit a fairway wood about four house down the street (I think that's roughly 80 yards or so). I hit from my side of the street to a house on the other side down four houses. I can also work on shaping shots by placing myself behind the neighbor's trees and hitting shots. I work on drawing the ball by hitting them off the street and trying to hook them around some trees and landing them on my driveway. If my wife is sitting in the driveway while I am practicing, I literally try to nail her with them. She does get upset with me but she gets over it. Your wife will too.

They are great golf balls for practice around the house. You can't hurt a kid (unless you nail him when he's close to you), can't break a window, can't hurt the finish on a car or damage anyone's shrubbery. When they land on a hedge they will often just land on top and stay there.

Check out one of my two worn out sand irons. This one's rusted out because it's been outside exposed to moisture. The second one is almost identical. Almost 1/2 of the club has disappeared from constantly hitting the sidewalk or pavement.

I love practicing my short game and the sidewalks around my neighborhood are my practice area. The neighbors all know I practice constantly and no one has ever said anything negative to me about my practice.

Buy 'em, you'll like 'em!

I should qualify that when I aim at my wife while she is sitting in the driveway, I am hitting my sand iron from about 50 yards away. I am not trying to hit her when I am next to her. I'm not really trying to hit her. Just testing how close I can get before she yells at me.

I don't know about the neighborhood safe. I hit my neighbor's house with a plastic ball. Luckily it landed on the roof and rolled back down. I never thought a plastic ball would go that far. All I was trying to do was fly it to the fence, oops. Swung a little harder cause it was plastic and up it went 45yrds w/ a LW. Stinking with chipping net.

It would be fun seeing my neighbors running for cover but I do not know how safe they can be for the car around my place

You won't want to be hitting that new wedge off the sidewalk. I don't like to hit them off the grass because you have to "pick" the ball since it just rides on top of the grass. That's why I use the sidewalk and an old SW,

I have hit the Birdee Balls. They are fun to hit and have limited distance but they are NOT soft so they don't have that safety factor.

I know exactly which balls you're talking about. I bought a bucket of 25 off of eBay. Dave Pelz promotes them for a few reasons. They fly true with maybe just a little bit of exageration of your swing path (flaw). My problem is that they still fly 100yards or better so you need more room than most urban yards offer. I live in a more rural area and hit mine from my yard to the next, each of which hase about an acre of room or more.

Now, if you want something to hit that flies shorter and still flies true, try these dang Birde Balls. They only fly about 30 yards or so and move like a real ball. All you have to do is get over hitting a plastic cylinder. Also, they don't weigh anything so you don't get the same feedback on off center hits. They are a great tool for grooving you swing though.
