I saw these Almost Golf practice balls at the store today and was intrigued. They seem to be heavier and more true than those foam or wiffle types. The package says "neighborhood safe" but I'm not so sure they won't break a window.

Anybody ever tried these and if so are they any good?

Yes! Buy them!

I have used them for years. They are great for practicing around the house or the neighborhood. They fly much like a golf ball, just slower and nowhere near as far. But they do give you a very good feel for how you hit a shot. I use them specifically to practice tight lies by hitting them off the sidewalk. I have worn out two sand irons and have started on my third hitting them off the sidewalk. I hit them from my driveway across the street into my neighbor's front yard. Then I go over there and hit them back but I do it from the street so that I don't leave the scuff marks on their sidewalk. I take my sand iron and a couple of balls whenever I go to the mailbox. I hit them from a particular spot towards the mailbox and hit them from a particular spot near the mailbox back towards the house.

I also practice getting the ball up quickly by hitting them over the house or garage. I work on chipping in the front yard by chipping from the sidewalk under the trees towards the house.

You cannot break a window with the "almost golf" balls.

I also work on my fairway woods by playing the balls off a piece of carpet. I can hit a fairway wood about four house down the street (I think that's roughly 80 yards or so). I hit from my side of the street to a house on the other side down four houses. I can also work on shaping shots by placing myself behind the neighbor's trees and hitting shots. I work on drawing the ball by hitting them off the street and trying to hook them around some trees and landing them on my driveway. If my wife is sitting in the driveway while I am practicing, I literally try to nail her with them. She does get upset with me but she gets over it. Your wife will too.

They are great golf balls for practice around the house. You can't hurt a kid (unless you nail him when he's close to you), can't break a window, can't hurt the finish on a car or damage anyone's shrubbery. When they land on a hedge they will often just land on top and stay there.

Check out one of my two worn out sand irons. This one's rusted out because it's been outside exposed to moisture. The second one is almost identical. Almost 1/2 of the club has disappeared from constantly hitting the sidewalk or pavement.

I love practicing my short game and the sidewalks around my neighborhood are my practice area. The neighbors all know I practice constantly and no one has ever said anything negative to me about my practice.

Buy 'em, you'll like 'em!

That is the greatest post ever on stracka. What is your relationship like with your neighbors?
