i like to keep track of my stats when i play. im confused if your ball is on the fringe or off the green and you decide to putt the ball. does this count as a putt or chip?

Bob Fergeson (a name I am sure none of you know) won the British Open three years in a row used his putter for nearly every shot within 40 yards of the green. He did it so often that people started calling his putter, the Musselburgh iron because he hailed from the ancient links of Musselburgh.

If it ain't on the green, it ain't a putt. Likewise, if it's on the green it's a putt. Chipping on the green is considered a putt. |

Sounds like me yesterday when Tim Conroy and I played Boise Ranch, except instead of a putter, it was my 3 hybrid. Gotta knock it 200 yards? 3 hybrid, need to punch out from under a tree? 3 hybrid, wanna bump and run from the short grass in front of the green...yep, 3 hybrid. Unfortunately, I was only able to pull off maybe half those shots...but it made for the great joke of the day. |

St. Andrews was the firt place I experienced hitting a putter from 70 yards off the green. There were very few similiarities between a 3 footer and a 70 yarder! |
