What is the best golf tip you have ever received? Feel free to volunteer more than one if you have them. What is something you learned that you are certain had a positive influence on your game and others could benefit from as well?

not my best tip but read a pretty basic one today regarding putting speed. basically since your right arm is the motor of the swing the instructor suggested when you are trying to figure how much force to use to hit the ball, pretend that you are tossing a ball underhand at the hole and what it would take to get there. i like that idea a little better than take 3 practice swings when standing over a putt: one that's too long, one that's too short, and one that is Goldilock's pooridge. it's a good tip but i think i'll give the other one a try especially on those 40 footers. can someone please explain to me the concept of taking 3 or more much faster than normal practice putting strokes right before putting? i see hackers and pros do it and it seems like that would really throw your speed off

I've heard a few people (pros and amateurs) that do this explain why. The common explanation that made sense to me is if your tendency is to leave them short, this pre-shot routine helps overcome this. I prefer the one you describe. I also practice left hand only putts (I putt left handed) around the hole all the time. It helps me groove that hand as the motor.

DON'T OVER SWING. I have been using this mental guide lately (I'll use my numbers to explain): for example, If you hit your 7 iron 170 yards. When you take a full swing think "I want to hit this "130" yards." It is totally a mental game. But it frees your motion and creates a relaxed powerful swing. I don't feel like I'm swinging hard anymore, yet i'm getting more distance and better accuracy. Using this "swing thought" I hit a 7-iron 180 yards uphill. I couldn't believe how far I hit it. It was just off the green on a back hole location, for an easy up and down. Hitting the middle of the club face and creating drag really improves the shot.

I do this will all of my clubs now, including my driver. I often drive the ball 285, but I consistently think in my mind "230." Most people over-swing and rob themselves of distance and accuracy.

gotta try this and i know someone else said take more club and another said swing at 80%. i have to work on a smoother tempo. that and a general routine are two things that i'm really gonna focus on this season. i hit my 7 between 140-150 right now but am not consistent enough with my ball striking. sometimes i speed up everything and then i have a topped flyer going past the hole or right because i didn't give myself time to get around and come through the shot. i'm gonna give these a shot and try and groove some sort of rythym. i'm looking for repeatable Freddy Couples smooth

Billy, how are you? I'm doing well, thank you for asking!..Billy,got another tip if your looking for distance & hitting the ball PURE!..it's the Tire Drill or the Impact Bag,both work well, but i,prefer the Tire,it's not forgiven when you mishit.Using the tire you only want to swing at 50% or you will break your wrist.Do 5 sets of 25 reps for 6-weeks and this spring you will be hitting that 7-iron,175 yards.Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the great advice. Much to try as soon as the weather cooperates. In the meantime I'm working on my putting and chipping stroke in the house. Hit 'em well!

100%

Hit the sweet spot and it goes 10 yards farther.

Anybody ever experience that?

It's the secret for why smoother, slower swings work. Improve your ball-striking and you'll automatically add distance.

All this is true. I just want to add that there is one other thing working for you besides hitting the sweet spot. Most players will actually see an INCREASE in their swing speed even though they are swinging with less effort. There are a whole bunch of reasons for this but they fall into two categories.

One is how it corrects (or tends to correct) a bunch of common swing faults: Casting the club, expending most of your energy at the beginning of the downswing, and coming over the top to name a few.

The other is swinging with less effort promotes more relaxed muscles and relaxed muscles can always move faster than muscles with tension.

All true, too.

Watch Vijay sometime. That guy looks like the loosest man on the planet when he rips his driver.

Sometimes when I try to rip a driver, I tense up early in the backswing, stop short of a full backswing, and the rest is a horror show. It's better to think FULL swing than FAST swing when you're trying to pound something ... of course, my mistake is just one of many, but if you don't finish your backswing, your clubhead speed won't matter, fast or slow.

Yep. We had that discussion earlier.

One of the reasons I like watching the LPGA. Little 125 lb girls hitting 150 yd 8-irons.

Going along with the earlier comments about smooth, tension free swing I read an article where Camilo Villegas said he sometimes flexes his muscles so he can then feel them relax before the swing. Having done a lot of work with relaxation techniques, this is definitely good advice. Especially if you are about to hit a rather difficult shot. Feeling your muscles allows you to relax them more easily.

All the comments people have been making are true. When you swing in good tempo you will actually swing faster, and are more likely to hit the sweet spot (more consistent).

Good tip. I'd have thought that flexing just before the swing might tense you up, but apparently not.
