Believe it or not June is on the way. Not that the past few weeks have done anything to support that theory. The WWII weekend is coming up in Reading, Pa. and I plan on attending this years show. Very interested in seeing how the P-61 Black Widow renovation is progressing as well as all the great aircraft on display. See the link for current show information.

I've loved vintage planes ever since I was a young'n. Read everything I could about them, and was fortunate enough to live in a town that brought several of them in for the annual airshow.

To me, there is no more gorgeous plane on planet earth than a P-51D...except for maybe a Spitfire Mark V. I've stood behind the roaring engines of a B-17 (Sentimental Journey) as it warmed up on the tarmac...cinders hitting me in the face, almost couldn't stand up straight from the brute force of the wind coming off those Wright Cyclones. The LOUDEST thing I ever heard (louder than afterburners, yep...) was a F-4U Corsair buzzing 10 feet off the runway at over 250 mph. Un-freaking-real.

Though I am more interested in the rotary aircraft, I do enjoy the sound of a C130 or C17 as it takes off or as I am exiting the the ramp at 1200ft with a chute on my back.

Shame we can't post pics directly to this. I work at the Oceanna Airshow in Virginia Beach Virginia as a sponsor every year.

High Flight

by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor even eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space...
...put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

A public group for Stracka/GolfNet members who also have an interest in Aircraft and Airshows. As individuals, we each have interests other than golf.

I've had a lifelong enthusiasm for things that fly and the interesting things they can do. I built increasingly sophisticated models as a child, joined the Air Force at 18, and still look up every time I hear an engine overhead.

I would enjoy exchanging information and experiences with other members who share this passion for the deep rumble of a radial engine and the piercing shriek of twin after-burners seemingly feet above your head!

The civil discussion of any topic is allowable at all times in the group. Discussion of the primary topic, Aircraft and Airshows is strongly encourage, however.
