I'm still a "young" man at 43. Does playing shorter, tighter courses that the old farts love seem like a good way to improve my game? In my round yesterday on the par 5's and 4's I hit driver, 5W, 3H, and 4I off the tee and the only club I didn't hit was the SW. I know I'll lose some balls (much to Dons pleasure) but it's an affordable course in the winter. Should I wear that track out preparing for next year?

Yes. Tight, short-ish courses hone your game. You need every shot in the book to play it well which keeps your target golf in check for the beginning of next season. You'll get to play more of your bag so you don't lose a step.

Yes and No. MHO, tighter, shorter course do hone the short game and place a premium on driving the ball straight however when you stretch it out you will find your long game from the fairway lacking. Once thing I do when I play the shorter courses and practicing is to tee off without a tee on those holes I would not normally hit my driver. That accomplishes two things, 1) keeps your long game ball striking sharp 2) Makes the hole easier when you do tee it up.

Vince, I gotta disagree here. You are not a young 43.

Back on topic for just a moment. I feel like anytime you play a different style of golf course you can find a way to improve your overall game. Anything from a little executive muni to a full blown teeth and claws beast will help you play a more rounded game. If it comes with an affordable price tag, so much the better...
