Just finished reading The Greatest Game Ever Played. I have seen the movie and knew the basic story of how a 20 year old amateur Francis Ouimet beat Harry Vardon in the 1913 US Open. The book goes into exquisite detail of the lives of both Ouimet and Vardon but also goes into al the characters surrounding that US Open such as a young Water Hagen. Even though I knew the outcome the writing is done in such a way that you feel the tension and suspense. I learned a lot about the climate of golf in those days, many different factions all vying for supremecy: professional vs amateur. Americanvs British. Even less obvious rivalries such as between English and Scottish players or American born American players vs European born American players.

Mark Frost is probably my favorite golf writer. His writing higlights the subjects without shoe horning in his own beliefs or opinions. Other than The Greatest Game Ever Played he has written: The Grand Slam:Bobby Jones, America and the story of golf and The Match: The day the game of golf changed forever. The Match is about a match that place at Cypress Point and featured two top amatuers, Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward versus two of golfs legends, professionals Byron Nelson ad Ben Hogan. All three of these are great books and definitly worth checking out.
