Was pretty shocked to hear the news last night that Phil is being investigated by the FBI and SEC.

"Five-time PGA major winner Phil Mickelson is one of three men being investigated in what the Wall Street Journal calls "a major insider-trading probe involving finance, gambling and sports," the newspaper reported on its website Friday night."

"According to the Journal, the investigation also involves Carl Icahn, the 78-year-old billionaire who runs the publicly traded Icahn Enterprises, and William "Billy" Walters, a famed Las Vegas bettor and real-estate mogul.

"I have done absolutely nothing wrong," Mickelson said in a statement Friday after the second round of the Memorial Tournament. "I have cooperated with the government in this investigation and will continue to do so. I wish I could fully discuss this matter, but under the current circumstances, it's just not possible."

Obviously the details aren't know yet. But I have a strong feeling that Phil is telling the truth, that he did absolutely nothing wrong. He plays golf with Icahn and he's a big name. That's the biggest reason he's being investigated.

I don't see it being any different than Jaypet being investigated for taking a 3 1/4 hour lunch break to "squeeze" in 18 holes. Other than his daily 11AM conference call it's not like he does anything in the office anyway so how is he screwing the company?

According to a report by a CNBC analyst on GC this morning, Icahn told CNBC he has never met nor spoken to Phil.

They also said the FBI told Phil he was not a target. The third player in this is a LV gambler.

Sorry, I read the article wrong. It was William Walters that Phil plays with.

It is all part of the conspiracy against Phil. They do not want him to get the career grand slam.

It's well known that Phil enjoys a $5 Nassau, or maybe a bit more ;-) when he plays golf with friends...not that that has any bearing on this.

Did I mention that closed a deal for my Houston group earlier in the week that was worth $500 grand to their profit line. I think that entitled me 3 hours on the golf course. I will be found Not Guilty all day long. It's all in the perspective!

Like Don, I really don't think Phil is telling a lie here. My reasoning for believing that is first of all Icahn does not know who Phil is. I can't really connect any dots through sponsorships or other outings to where those two really would know one another. More importantly though, Phil was interviewed by the investigators after Thursday's round. If Phil was really that concerned or worried, do you think he'd have shot -2 the next day on Friday? That's what gives me the most hope that Phil's not in any trouble here.

On another note, it's been entertaining to see the Tiger worshippers come out in droves at this declaring Phil guilty before proven innocent. Not the other way around. They see the slightest chance to go after Phil, and they'll take the bait and act like the guy just committed genocide against hamsters.

What'll be interesting is to see what Phil shoots today now that all of America knows, and what he says after the round, if anything.

Not sure how this will pan out but one observation I have made is that this is going to highly publicized as to Phil. Showing up at the tournament, knowing Phil is represented and would not talk to them without counsel present, sent a very loud message that Phil will be the headliner in this. Prepare for plenty of leaks. If the reports are true in that this has been an ongoing investigation for the past two years, I am sure it not coincidental that this story broke two weeks prior to the US Open.

I need to go watch the movie Wall Street again to brush up on my insider trading rules. I think I may never understand it. A guy trusts a licensed advisor to buy or sell for him and maximize gain or loss. If the guy mitigates a large gain or loss with inside info, the guy whose portfolio he manages can go to jail. I think I need Gordon Gecko to explain Phil's dilemma to me?!

That presents a disturbing mental image. While Phil may or may not have committed an error of judgement or association, he's no North Korean dictator...

Apparently, according to the WSJ and other sources, when Carl Ichan was making a bid to take over Chlorox, the stock surged as a result of Phil and Walters buying up large quantities of shares. Ichan and Walters are apparently good friends and discuss investments often, and Phil is allegedly a pal of Walters. When a limited number of investors make large purchases of public shares just prior to a stock surging, it automatically raises red flags with the SEC, as it should. I'd like to believe Phil has done nothing unlawful. It does, however, makes you wonder what prompted Phil and Walters to buy such large quantities.

I'm not a lawyer and I don't presume to play one on Stracka, but I know a bit about investments. If your investment broker purchased shares in a company's stock with information not available to the public on your behalf but without your knowledge, any law enforcement organization would be hard-pressed to get a grand jury to indict you. The broker, yes. But you, very difficult.
