Ok Everyone, My hometown of Sopchoppy, Fl. will be on Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs tonight at 9pm - the dirty job - Worm Grunting! Yes, I've done it and didn't beleive it was possible when I first moved here.

Charles Kuralt's "On the Road" was here about 30 years. After interviewing some of the worm grunters and after they talked about how much money you could make, they were all audited by the IRS!

Enjoy and don't make too much fun of my rinky dink little town!

ok,i'll probably miss it so what is worm grunting??

You rub a piece of iron, most of the time a piece of iron spring off of a car axle, across a wooden stob which is hammered into the ground. the wood stob is generally a piece of hard word.

When you rub the iron across the wood stob it creates a grunting noise. If you are in the right spot, generally a low wet spot but not underwater, earth worms will come out of the ground and you can pick them up and use them for bait for fishing.

some people think the worms are attracted to the vibration of the grunting and others think they are irritated by it and are trying to get away. As mentioned in the show, the latter is most likely correct because the worm thinks the vibration is a mole and they come to the surface to get away from it.

Very strange sight!

By the way, the first part of the show was about clams from St Teresa Bay, a favorite fishing spot for me, and St James Island was mentioned and that is the location of some of those great photos I posted from St James Bay Golf Course
