There has been a lot of discussion about Tiger and Jack recently but I ask this who wins a tournament consisting of only Tiger, Jack, Hogan or a 4th golfer of your choice. Assume each player is at his absolute peak. They are all playing the equipment they each feel gives them the best chance to win. They have all had as much time as they deem necassary to study/practice on the course. No extreme wind or rain. The tournament is 4 rounds, 1 round a day.

I'm taking Ben Hogan. At his best he can hit every fairway and every green. His pitching and chipping are elite, there is a story where Ben is hitting wedges onto a green that is severely sloping away from him and he is so accurate and controls his spin so well he spins the ball to a stop up the slope. Later Nick Faldo tries the same thing and cannot do it even though he was the #1 golfer in the world at the time. While he is not the best putter in the group his ability to get it closest to the flag will offset that. Ben Hogan is also one of the best lag putters ever. I think the combination of Hogans perfect ballstriking and sheer will would carry the Hawk to victory over Nicklaus, Woods or anyone else you could throw at him.

(Some of you are probably surprised I didn't go with Tiger, he's obviously 2nd but he is no match for Hogan)

I'm with you, Luke. I would pick Ben hands down. It's almost impossible to beat a guy that hits practically every fairway and green. Hogan was never very far from the hole on his approaches either. Just an absolute machine.

Honestly, I'd probably take Jack to place 2nd and Tiger 3rd...UNLESS Tiger is hitting irons and such off the tee. The guys that wear Tiger out are the guys who stripe it down the middle all day, and Jack was pretty good at that as well...not as good as Hogan by any means, but better than Tiger. But like I said, if we're talking about Tiger hitting stingers off of every tee box, he would likely beat Jack and probably give Ben a run for his money too. It's just that driver...too wild with it.

Such an event would not end. It would be a perpetual tie. None of them would buckle or miss at the key moment. There literally would be no winner.

My 4th golfer would be Bobby Jones. My god. A match between the 4 of them would go beyond words in terms of how monumental it would be. Too bad it'll never happen. I'd probably order it Tiger winning, Hogan 2nd, Jack 3rd, Jones 4th. I would pick Tiger because he just absolutely never misses a putt when it's do or die. The only time I can think of him not doing that before Thanksgiving in 09' was when he missed a par putt on the 18th in the 05' Masters to win it outright. And he still won in a playoff with a birdie as it turns out.

My only comment is repetitive. In their primes no golfer dominated the game more than Tiger. He didn't win he chewed people up. His all time scoring average, the Tiger Slam, largest margin of victory records in two majors. If you are talking in their prime one day I honestly think Tiger would win and the margin would be big. Tiger also had a better short game than Hogan and JCk. He putted better than Hogan and as good as Jack.

However if it was match play...Walter Hagen would be them all one on one. There has never been a better match play golfer...ever.

Byron Nelson, Tiger Wood, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan in that order at their peak.

Honorable mention: Walter Hagan, Sam Snead, and Bobby Jones.
