The PGA has said according to the golf channel that 20% of all golfers use a anchored putter. Are they serious? 1 out of every 5 golfers? The PGA can go protect Bradley and Simpson, and all the others who use a anchored putter but please don't make a stupid statement. Being a amateur player who has played for years IMHO I can't recall seeing anyone using a anchored putter.

Robert, not sure where you live but I see them every wherd here in the Midwest. I live on a golf course and I am out numbered by anchor putters. Just off the top of my head I have 5 guys on my block that use them. On top of that both the pro at this course and my country club use them...and one of the assistant pros.

On top of that I have one that I have never played a round with. So if you told me it was 15-20% I wouldn't disagree.

I saw that percentage also, thought it was high, and living here in the MidAtlantic I have not seen many long putters. It must be the section of the country. Even when I have travelled and was paired with others, very few of the long putters.

Anchored putters are a joke.

Agree. I play a lot of different courses and a lot of golf in AZ, and I have ran across 1 golfer that used one in 12+ years I have been here.

20%? I guess you can inflate anything when you want something to favor your side of the arguement.

Agree, almost never see them around here. Having said that I expect to be tripping over the things if this weather EVER!!! warms up around here and I can go play again... All ya gotta do is talk about banning something and everybody has to have one.

I'd guess I've only played with 10 people at the most who have used a long or belly putter in 4.5 years of playing golf. Luck of the draw maybe, but I can only think of 7 guys on the PGA Tour that do anchor.

The way it was stated it wasn't clear what population was surveyed? Was it PGA Tour players? Champions Tour players? All golfers in the US? The World? A survey of Junior golfers? It just wasn't clear what they were referring to.

I live in SC and moved here 15 years ago from MA. I never saw a club member in MA using a anchored putter and I know no one where I play here in SC uses one. I have played a lot of rounds with young and old golfers and I haven't saw anyone using one except the pro golfers.

Gary Williams seemed very clear that the PGA was including all golfers. I don't think that 20% of the PGA players use anchored putters. The fact is 3 out of the last 5 majors were won with players using a anchored putter.

So let's see if we are even talking about the same quote. I heard Tim Finchem throw this out when he was being interviewed Sunday at the Accenture Match Play Championship on NBC. He actually threw out the number 18%, but again it was a vague reference, 18% of what? Is it the Tim Finchem quote or somebody else, somewhere else?

I have only ever seen one guy use a long putter on the course and he actually used it like a traditional putter. Outside of him, I have never seen or played with someone who uses an anchored putter.

I saw an old guy using a long putter a while back on the putting green. It was right about the time when people were saying that as long as you didn't anchor it to your body, that long putters were ok. Well, this guy held the very tip of the putter about 6 inches away from his chest and was putting like $h1t. I'm thinking, why all the trouble? Just get any normal length putter that feels good to you and do what you have been doing for the last 40 years.
People think this long putter is some kind of magic bullet. Its not.
The rule makers of golf could put a quick end to this thing. All they need to do is make a new rule that limits the overall length of any putter. Period! Make it 35 inches or so.
They have done it with drivers. Why not for putters?
