How do you know which holes to use for your avg distance on drives?

I am guessing the ones you get it in the fairway....

The tours pick two holes that run in opposite directions.

army grunt47 is right for the PGA Tour, in addition to what he said, I believe it's 2 holes that are opposite wind direction as well.

As far as on stat keeping here, you can enter your drive distance on all the holes except par 3's.

I don't worry about driver distance posting because it's more important to me whether or not I hit the fairway or not. A 320 yard drive 40 yards deep into the woods isn't very impressive.

Speaking for myself, I'd be impressed with a 320 yard drive. Don't care if it ended up on the freeway!

Steve since you asked "which holes for your driver distance average", I'm going to assume this is a question about posting on this site.

If you use the stats option when you post your scores the site provides you a Driving Distance box for each hole to be considered in your average distance driving.

Yes I was wondering which holes you should use to enter your driver distance. I know on the PGA the pick certain holes, I just didn't know if their was a way they decided on which holes to use.

If their is no scientific method I guess I can just use the ones that land in the fairway lol

As far as I can tell the way this site does it is asks you to fill in a driving distance on any hole that isn't a par 3. Of course some holes (like par 4s with severe doglegs and no way to cut the corner) don't give you an opportunity to take out driver. So it can tend to dampen your true average with driver, but that's the way they do it here.

Have a few holes like that at the course I play...not so much doglegs, but if you hit driver, you're going to end up in a creek that cuts through the fairway...I just don't keep track of distance on those.

well if I tracked it..It would be one on each side and in opposite directions. IMO, I'd pick the holes that you use driver and hit the fairway.
I can only hit driver on 2 or 3 holes without something coming into play so lucky for me that narrows it down...

As a bit of an aside, I see great value in knowing the average distance and range you hit with your driver. We have lots of holes out here that require carries off the tee over water, wasteland, even caverns. You better know your numbers when playing holes like that.

I only keep track of driving distance a handful of times a year, and when I do, I count all the holes I hit driver on. It's not how the PGA does it, but I'm only interested in getting a ballpark figure.

If I were going to pick two holes per course, I'd pick the holes with the straightest, widest fairways. If the wind was blowing hard, I'd also try to factor that in, so I wouldn't be cheating with two downwind holes.
