What methods do you rely on most to learn something new or improve your game? Do you prefer written instructions from books, magazines, tips from Stracka friends? Do you lean towards videos, one-on-one private lessons, watching others, trial and error? Or maybe a combination?

Personally I read a lot about golf techniques and drills. Videos are useful and an occasional private lesson helps identify those things I can't see. I get a lot of value learning from other Stracka folk. While I do practice some I don't practice enough and that's reflected in my scores. I admit I enjoy playing more that practicing.

Mostly trail and error and video. Occasionally I'll see something online or on TV I might try and implement, but it's mostly just me who helps my game.

Most of my best results have come from taking lessons and then practicing what I've learned. Can't really say I have ever made any good progress on my own. I do enjoy reading magazine tips and watching some of the short game tips on TV during tournament broadcasts. I don't find the shows like "The Golf Fix" to be much help, but I'll still pick up a club and try some of the stuff out if I'm watching.

I learn from watching the golf ball. When your game gets good enough to where you can tell what your doing wrong just by watching the flight of the ball, the game becomes fun. Especially when you know what to do to fix the problem, you may not be able to fix it right away, but at least you know how to.

This a weak area for me. I can sometimes tell what I've done wrong but other times I can not. For example, if I let my arms come away from my body on a tee shot I'll almost always hit a fade. If I keep them close to my body the balls goes straight or maybe even draws a bit. But then sometimes I just pound the ball into the ground and can't feel why. I know I'm coming in steep but just don't feel it to know what I did different.

I'm with gj24...the golf ball is the ultimate instructor. Learn the basic principles of clubface orientation, swing path, and angle of attack that combine to produce the various shots in golf. Then it's all about watching the ball and seeing where it goes. The journey then is to find the way for YOU to get the club on the ball consistently in the way that matches the shot(s) you like to see.

If you have an idea about the golf swing in general (those basic principles I talked about in the first sentence), then go to the range for a few hours with only a 7 iron, and hit 400 balls. Seriously. Then do it again ASAP. If you're hitting the shots with purpose and determination, and really trying to find that feel, then you WILL figure out how to do it. I promise!

I only truly learn from mistakes. In the 2009 US Hickory Open a player made a comment about my swing on the 1st tee and it ruined me. That winter I revamped my swing, in fact flattened the plane which made staying on plane relatively routine.

If I see a pattern in my game that is bad I will generally attack it head on. The only way to get better at golf is to try to make your weaknesses your strengths.

Where do you struggle the most? Most golfers go to the range and practice shots they know they can pull off...instead try only working on the ones you cannot.

I learn by doing. At the begining of the year I had a big banana slice. I figured out that if I roll my right wrist over right at impact it goes straight or has a little draw. However if I roll over to early I get a lot of draw or a hook. My timing has gotten pretty good but I'm not crazy about relying on it so I'm trying to figure out a way to hit straight with out the timing element.

I don't read the tips in the magazines or watch them on tv. All it does is clog my head with a ton of different thoughts. I'm too cheap and stubborn to take a lesson but mainly I just like to figure things out on my own.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I always find it interesting the way people can take different paths to arrive at the same destination.

Wishing you all a great Memorial weekend and please offer a moment of silence for those that have given the ultimate sacrifice.

For me, it is mostly trial and error. I only do this on the range. The only time I will try something new on the course is if I am playing by myself and that doesnt happen very often.

I'm self taught...The more you play the better you get, well for some people.

Video seems to be what works best for me. That includes video of myself swinging. Though I am starting to get a better feel when I'm swinging that would be second and yes developed thru trial and error and video combined with lots of trial and error. I try to read a lot of articles as well but find I am using this less and less as I have read or watched the majority of these already
