I've been trying out some low compression balls in an effort to gain yardage out of my (I think) slower swing. According to a swing speed calculator I've used (I haven't been on a radar yet) I carry the ball between 200 and 220 for a swing speed of about 85 to 95 mph using a ProV1 and a Callaway FTi 10 degree neutral driver. I'd like to get some feedback from players of this swing speed group, or those with knowledge of this group, regarding balls such as the Nike One Vapor, Bridgestone 330 RX, and soon the Maxfli Tour LC. Have the balls really worked for you in the real world? Which one is your choice and what do you like about it? I played a Maxfli DDH II when I was in high school but it seemed like Maxfli went the "toy store" route as opposed to being a serious contender in the PGA Tour golf ball market. I'm sorry, but I don't care how good it may play, I ain't hittin' no NOODLE!!!

It's not the ball I use since our swing speeds are different, but the Nike Karma ball is a 50 compression and might be a good choice for you.
The Bridgestone B330RX is borderline for your swing speed. 85 mph is pretty low for a ball of that caliber. The Nike One Vapor is very similiar to the Titleist NXT Tour and I have heard it both ways. Some say the NXT Tour is the better ball, some say the Vapor. Now I know I can't give you a link here as that's a no-no anymore, but do a google search for Dr. Mulligan's Golf Balls and I'll be glad to send you whatever you choose to go with. Our balls are used but in mint condition, no pen marks, scuffs or discoloration. They'll look like they rolled out of the box. The Karma's are $10/dz, Vapor's are $17/dz, and B330RX are $30/dz. Any of the lower compression balls should play about the same. I think you should use your 220 as your base line and hit a couple of brands and see if you think your distance improved. As reguards to Noodles, as long your not stepping on your own you should be fine.

My swing speed is 92-95. Someone from this site recommended the Wilson 50-50 last summer and I was shocked at how much farther I hit the ball and the feel was good around the green. The problem is Wilson has stopped making the 50-50 - they've come out with another line and I haven't tried them yet.
I have been told the Bridgestone 330RX would be a good ball for our swing speed but youll have to try them. I read the post that said the Nike Karma was a 50 compression ball which I did not know so that should a great ball also. It is my understanding that you should hit a higher compression ball during the winter months though. |

I have a swing speed just a smidge above yours I like Bridgestone B330s. Of course I know you will let us in on your finding through charts and graphs. lol. Sorry just had to gig ya.

Yeah, I'm already working on a sine cosine triple helix formula melding Excel, DBase VII, and Quantum Pys 00 to be able to share the precise moment that a caucasion male aged 50.72 years, reaching a swing speed of 97.89 MPH @ 55 degrees F should switch to the 330 RX ball. I'll make sure I give you a sneak preview first Crocket! hehehe Really though, I think I have a faster swing speed than I think I do. I don't think I'm hitting the sweet spot with enough consistency. Otherwise, where are these 265yd drives coming from out of nowhere. I hit a 7 iron 172 yds the other day and blew the green. I did have a tail wind and it may have been stronger above the trees than I thought, but damn it just took off. Bottom line, I think I learned more about my swing this year than I have since I read Golf My Way by Nicholas in 1977. Good Times...... |

I played the Maxfli DDH II for years until I couldn't find them in Germany. I switched to Titleist and haven't found anything better since. The Callaway i felt too hard as did the Srixon (don't remember the model). Maxfli jumped ship, as far as I'm concerned, when they went the "Noodle" route. Surely they weren't planning on keeping a market share of the PGA Tour with a freakin' NOODLE.
At any rate, Maxfli is introducing 3 new Tour Series balls in the spring, one of which is going to be the LC. It would be nice to see them back on Tour and even nicer if the LC turns out to be a good ball. It's going to be a low compression, surlyn cover, graduated density core ball. Wilson sent me a two ball box of the 50/50s before I knew what they were all about. I smacked one into a cotton field and the other into a peanut field and have no idea if they were any good or not. I too tried the Wilson Fifty/Fifty Ball & was impressed with distance and still had some green side spin. I tried contacting WILSON GOLF DIRECTLY, worst CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE especially since I had played their BRAND for years. I'm also a slow swinger (89 - 94 MPH). I've started playing the SRIXON brands and recommend the following: AD-333 , TRISPEED or the NEW STAR "Z" the SOFT feel is also a good choice. I DON'T PAY FULL RETAIL FOR NEW! ( I ONLY PURCHASE RECYCLED GOLF BALLS ) I know of a few E-BAY store sites that I've ordered and TRUST... So when I see a deal or some BRAND I want to experiment with, I bid on E-BAY. My recent order included the NEW Srixon "Z" STAR, NOT THE "ZX" model. I was impressed enough and to date these have the LOWEST COMPRESSION of the PREMIUM Golf Balls. You may also want to consider Callaway's ORANGE LOGO "HX", Tour IX and Tour golf balls. |

Oh, and in case anyone doesn't know, Taylor Made bought the Maxfli brand and is making the new balls. I'm optomistic.

I know I saw a 0 compression ball when I was in a golf headquarters a couple weeks ago. Wished I could remember the brand for you. If I get back in there tomorrow I will check it out for you. Haven't hit one yet. Really look forward to seeing your research findings as well. Would love to test some more out but this snow for over a week and another week predicted. Just not used to that here in the panhandle of TX.

I've been using the Maxfli Tour LC for the last 6 or so rounds. I also bought a Callaway Tour FT 9 10.5. My average drive has increased from about 210/220 to 240/250. My very good meat whackers have jumped from 227 to 269.
It almost seems like the spin coming into the greens in down 'cause I regularly stopped and dropped the Pro V1s. The Maxfli seems to be rolling out 4 or 5 yards, BUT, I think this has a lot more to do with the greens still recovering from the aeration and sanding. I mean, it's hard to find your ball mark sometimes on the greens so they're just not as soft as there were a rew months ago. Of all the balls I've tried, the Nike One Vapor was running ahead of the Bridgestone B330 RX until the Maxfli came out this March. My 7 iron picked up from about 148 to 155 on all the low compression balls. I'm still blowing a few greens when I hit one "pure" (I've had a problem with that term since the last series of Big Break) as I continue to dial in the yardage on the new ball. |
