Something I learned while playing in a scramble

Last weekend I played in a 2 day scramble. In addition to the normal closest to the pin, long drive and long putt challenges, they also did something they called "logo ball". Each foursome was given a specially marked ball and guys would each take turns playing that ball for an entire hole. Any group that still had their ball after 18 holes would have there ball put into a bucket and drawn for prize money.

I didn't want to be the one to lose the ball and cost my team a chance at a prize so I started playing conservatively of the tee, I had 5 tee shots and on all 5 I used 4 iron, a club I don't often hit, and in the process learned that my dispersion pattern with the 4 iron is a lot tighter than with the driver. Shocking, I know. I also learned it is a heck of a lot easier to play a shot from 150 from the fairway or just off than it is to play a shot from 70 through the trees. Not really groundbreaking, but I guess I had to learn the hard way.

something i learned a long time ago, i can hit my driver farther. farther into the woods, farther out of bounds etc. i have gotten better lately but if i have to hit a tight fairway i usually use my 3 hybrid, about 2 hundred yards and pretty straight.

That's a nice twist on scrambles. So they do this logo ball thing only one hole? Pretty good idea.

No, it was on every hole. It rotates around to each guy and he has to play it for the entire hole. I had it on holes 1,5,9,13 and 17

Wow. Sounds fun and a nice change to the normal format.

So true. It is constant amusement for me and my 180-210 yard drives IN THE FAIRWAY to play against dudes who are mesmerized by their 280-yard drives, even though they are cosntantly out of bounds/in the woods.

Yeah i'm in the trees so much i'm thinking of replacing my 6 iron with an axe.

At my home course it does not really help to be long off the tee. There are very few holes that require me to hit a driver off the tee. I might use the driver 6 times per round and 3w 2 times at the most. All of my other tee shots are with something between my 3 and 5 irons. I hit my 3 220 off the tee and with a 10-20 yard draw. With this club I can place the ball right in the middle of the fairway or where ever I have to have it to get a shot at the green. There are alot of dogleg left holes on the course and two of the par 5s are double doglegs so this helps alot.

In a tournament about a month ago I hit driver the first 6 holes or so when I could and hit it awful. Found only 2 fairways and only 1 wasn't a pop fly to left field. I took 4 iron and 3 hybrid the rest of the way off the tee and hit every fairway coming in I think except 1. Didn't help my score since I was hitting 170-180 yard shots on a 6800 yard course, but it seemed to be a whole lot easier than long and wild. Just ask Phil Mickelson if he'd like to do anything different off the 72nd tee at Winged Foot.
