when I walk, which I do all the time I find brand new golf balls just of the fairway or in a small ditch.
When I find a ball I make sure there is no one on holes next to me or anyone else who could have just hit the ball.
What I think is great is most of the time the balls I find are Prov1, Calloway touri, srixon, nike. I dont understand these balls are not cheap and if you look for 2 min they would have found their ball. To you who hit these balls and do not look for it I say thanks this allows me to try out the balls.
Dont know about you but I hate to lose a ball if it did not hit it water or O.B.
I hit srixon when I can afford to buy them . To day I found 3 new prov1.

when there is no one behind me i'll look for balls along the edge of the woods...i found 13 on one par 5 on Saturday and not one of them was deeper than 10 feet.

I see lots of balls that aren't mine when no one else is around, but I never take them. I'm a big believer in that the ball you play effects your score significantly. I don't wanna be playing a ball that is meant for more roll and less spin when I want to play a ball with less roll and more spin. See what I mean?

Funny. I live on a course and get 7-10 golf balls per week in my back yard (and occassionally over the house and in the front yard or street). Of 10 golf balls per week, at least 6-7 will be ProV1 or another "premium" tour quality golf ball. There are only a few I would consider "cheap" golf balls.

I'm sure most cases is a depth perception. They are looking 30 yards in front of or behind where they think they actually lost their ball.

Some golfer really have money to burn. I look for any of mine approx. 2 to 3 minutes. Depth preception also plays a role in losing golf balls, and another factor the golfer rather ego thinking he hit it further than what he really did hit it.

sometimes you can look for a ball that should be in plain sight, but cannot find it. then someone a few holes behind, not looking, just strolling finds it easily. I've seen it happen to people I play with and it's happened to me. the person may not be lazy or have money to burn. that's just the way it is sometimes.

Hopefully you're not taking all day looking for those balls you lose poisonivy. Even if there isn't anybody directly behind you, they could be fast approaching so please don't take 15 min looking for those unless it's a really slow day on the course. I've lost many balls in the past that I knew I should have found, but for one reason or another they seemed to vanish from sight (in a small deep patch of grass, under a leaf, not looking in the right spot cause the course is very hilly, etc.). Some times you can swing back around to the same spot you had just been at and the ball will all of a sudden pop out at you. If I can't find them in the 5 min allowed (usually less) then I would rather not waste my time and you usually find a few others later in the round to replace them anyways if you ever get into trouble. I doubt if the people who lost those balls just decided to not look for them, as you said they're pretty expensive. But I love the free ones too!

No I dont spend 15 min looking for balls I find these balls while walking you see alot more when you walk I just walked a round 18 holes in 2 1/2 hours is that slow play no one likes slow play and I do know about the 5 min rule

My big bucket at home is up to 400-plus balls, and at least 300 were found on golf courses.

And while I'm picky about what ball I play, I always put brand new tour-level balls in my rotation. $4 is $4, and it's a great way to have a mini-test run with a ball I'd likely never buy, like TaylorMade Pentas or anything made by Callaway or Srixon.

Her husband (I presume) was pissed off that he had to go get my ball (I certainly wasn't going to run 100 yards to fetch it) and told me I was being rude! I explained to him the above four points and that it was not my fault she didn't check to see if it was her ball before hitting it. He basically told me to !*?# off, but the lady apologized for her error and for him.

I dunked the ball in the water soon after,

You have an unusually high tolerance for morons. I would have dunked him in the water, not my Pro V1.

I live on a semi-public golf course and get about 5-8 balls per week in my back yard (and sadly occasionally through my windows). I keep a box of them in my laundry room to hit back onto the golf course late in the evenings when everyone is gone. Interestingly, about 65% of these golf balls are premium balls like ProV1. Of all brands errantly finding their way into my yard, ProV1 is #1.
