What do I do with it? I can't use it to log in on the GHIN site. Is that something that will happen in the near future?

It's technically not a "GHIN number", more of a "number in the GHIN system". All of our golfers, whether our golf association client golfers or our public players will be able to "login" to GHIN system with this number.

But there's zero to gain there. I've seen their site, all you can do is post scores, see a few stats, course handicap calculator, and search for other golfers. Our site and app does all of that just as well if not better.

What this does get you now, which is very helpful, is that when entereing a tournament and the tournament director or your playing partner ask you for a "GHIN number", you can provide that number and they can easily verify your handicap index in the GHIN system. You won't have to hear "We only take GHIN numbers!" from tournament directors.

As of today when I try to login to the USGA's GHIN site by entering my new "GHIN #" and my last name, I get the following error message:

You are not authorized to access GHIN products.
Please contact your Golf Club.

Is this error message temporary, so that eventually I (and a tournament director looking to verify my handicap index) can access my information and the products in the GHIN system? If so, when will that occur?

This is not temporary. You won't get access to the GHIN system.
Each and every function the GHIN website / app has is present in our software.
Any tournament director will be able to find your index and scoring history in the GHIN system with your new GHIN/USGA ID.
if you want to be able to acutally use the GHIN software you'd need to join a club through the Virginia State Golf Association that uses GHIN. They have an online eclub option that costs a whopping $99, as it includes some sort of VIP card.
