Distance hype!

I just finished renewing my product certification and fitting certification for a major golf company and part of doing so is learning all of the product specs. While going through the iron specs and comparing them to my personal specs it hit me just how much companies have beefed up their lofts and shaft lengths for distance gains. They claim that their 6 iron is two clubs longer than previous models but when you look at the specs you realize that their 6 iron is really just an older 4 iron with a 6 stamped on the sole. When are people going to learn that all of the distance gain promises are just hype for them to spend money!

So does this apply to Drivers?

Should I replace my old Callaway FT9 with a new XHot or X2Hot?

IMO drivers are different in this way. The driver IS your distance club and it always has been.

1. So it's all about speed through the impact zone,
2. maximizing the effect the clubhead has on ball speed,
3. optimizing launch angle
4. and spin.

This is why fitting is so important (and different) when it comes to the driver versus irons.

It's not just about the design of the head. The shaft, your setup, body type, swing technique, and athletic ability all are major factors.

Personally, I have yet to be convinced that 2015 driver heads perform significantly better than other top models made in the last decade.

So to me, the answer to your question has to do with other factors. The Callaway FT-9 is a fine driver head. If you got a good fitting back then and your swing technique and speed haven't changed, you may have very little to gain in changing your driver. If you bought you FT-9 off the rack or if any of the things above changed, you may have quite a bit to gain, but the place to start is finding a someone who has the skills to get you fitted for the right combination.

Yes this applies with drivers too but to the opposite effect. Taylormade is the worst offender of it too. They purposefully make their drivers with more loft than what is stamped oh their heads.

only 25-30% of the guys I play with have more distance but 70% of them have fewer strokes at the end of the round.

Hmmm . . . . methinks a short game refresher is in order !

Not necessarily. 300 yards into the woods (or water, or OB, or two fairways over) requires more than a short game.

Sorry, I assumed that since you had more distance .... it also meant that you were still in play .... silly me !

If we could just ban all the TMag marketing campaigns there wouldn't even be a need for this conversation. Somebody over there tried to convince people that they needed to hit their irons as far as possible, rather than pin high, and the general public bought it hook, line and sinker. I still like the gaps that my irons have from 2005 with a 44* 9-iron
