So, today I screwed up and drove about 50 miles to the Battleground GC on the East side of Houston from the West side near Katy where I live. I had actually made a tee time at Faith Bridge GC (formerly Fox Creek GC) in Hempstead which is even further West of where I live. Anyway, that's a story for another day.
We were able to get on the Battleground and were told by the starter to pair up with four people only two of who were actually playing. We told the group what the starter said and initially they said fine. Prior to teeing off they said that the "girls" would be putting a couple during the round. After a minute or so, they told us that they really would prefer to play by themselves. So, we said fine and they hit first and took off. So after they got away from the clubhouse, the "girls" were actually hitting full shorts from the tees and the fairways. My wife and I assumed that they claimed that the girls were along just for the ride but were actually playing. They just didn't want to pay for the girls because the green fee was $50 and they apparently weren't very good. Indeed, they did play essentially the entire round until they got close to the clubhouse. In my mind, that was "theft." Golf Courses are in the business of providing access to their golf course and for that privilege they charge a green fee. It's how the course makes money and how the folks that run it make a living. I thought it was very crass of them to take advantage of the folks that run the course. The course owners were nice enough to allow non-players on the course and these folks essentially stole two rounds of golf from them. What concerns me is that if this happens much, the courses may implement a no non-players policy. Everyone on the course has to pay. What do you all think? Was it theft? Should they have done that? Should I have said something to the Marshall sometime during the day? |

I see two sides to it. On one side, every player must have clubs and whoever was monitoring the course should have picked up on 4 people hitting shots and only 2 bags.
On the other side, I recalled a trip that I set up for a bunch of guys in Gettysburg a few years back. My father had recently had shoulder surgery and wasn't able to play. He wasn't in a sling at that point and could freely move his arm. We asked the pro shop if he could ride a cart on his own (which made us a group of 5) just to be there and watch us. They said it was fine and due to his condition he did not swing a club. They didn't even charge him for the cart. Basically, the group your were paired with was dishonest and they should have been reported and tossed off the course for it. I would have called the pro shop when they told me they wanted to play alone and then you witnessed all of them playing. As far as my fivesome, we WERE honest and held to the rules. So no foul, no theft for us. |

How old are you? You look like a middle age man by your sig pic. If so, why are you asking people you don't even know how you should have acted? If you were upset about what happened, then tell the clubhouse about it. and move on! Why do you need someone else's validation for your own beliefs at your age. My God man, really?

It was theft!! I have actually went out on the course under almost the exact same circumstances and got the fees from unpaid "players". This is also one reason that we charge a cart fee for people that just want to ride along.

That's theft. You have to pay for the right to play and those two didn't do that. If it's only one shot over the course of 18 holes, fine. No big deal. But if it's consistent and happens on multiple occasions over the course of the round, which it sounds like this was, different story.

You've been around here awhile. My intent was simply to note something interesting that I observed today. We can all respond with the same contempt you showed every time anyone posts anything. Got a rules question? My god man, can't you read? You should simply get a rules book and look the darn rule up yourself. Are you so stupid that you can't get a book and read the rule for yourself? After investigating you personally, you look like you have moderate intelligence and should be able to read rules without having to ask others to do it for you. And on and on... If you didn't like the topic, move on. It wasn't necessary for you to get personal. You don't know me personally so it surprises me that you responded with such vitriol. |

These folks knew better. They apparently believed that if they didn't have a set of clubs along for the two ladies, it didn't count as a round of golf and therefore they shouldn't have to pay. |
