...it's a game. A hard one at that. And my favorite by far. But it ain't no sport.

If it were truly a sport, a guy in the shape (round) of Kevin Stadler wouldn't be leading the tournament right now.

As the Olympics go, I'm not gonna touch that. Some sports like archery are debatable. The others... like I said, I won't go into it and name the ones in question.

But I just don't accept the idea that a living thing like a bull or horse can have such a profound impact on who wins or loses when it has no idea it's being used for such. Just my humble opinion. We agree to disagree.

So where would that leave you in the motor racing area? The car or motorcycle does all the hard work. Is NASCAR a sport? Are drivers athletes?

Emphasis from my post on "living thing." Since drivers are operating their cars and they can't do anything without the driver, sure, it's a sport and they're athletes.

I'm OK with it being a sport, I have a hard time with an athlete that sits strapped into a seat for the whole race. Now maybe those dudes on the X-Game motocross bikes are more entitled to be called athletes.

Every time this question comes up it seems to me that it hinges on three things:
1. The definition of the word: sport
2. A comparison of other activities that are called "sports".
3. Determining what level of physical exertion is required to qualify.

The first one is interesting, because even the major dictionaries disagree. Oxford defines sport as: an activity involving physical exertion and skill, while Webster defines it as: physical activity engaged in for pleasure. Clearly these two definitions are not the same and suggest a physical element that is at different levels.

Given these different definitions, no wonder there are many games that are called sports that may rise to the level of one definition, but fall short of others.

Even if you could convince everyone that the Oxford definition was the 'correct' one. Then you have to deal with the question of where the line is. At what level of physical activity does it become 'physical exertion'?

So this is one of many unanswerable questions due to the imprecision of language.

When I think of sports, I'm thinking of physical endurance/strength/skill tests...like, say, tennis, or more traditional Olympic-style sports like the 100m sprint, or competition swimming. Stuff that requires real athleticism.

Ya, but the Olympics are ironically called the "Olympic Games" not the "Olympic Sports". lol
