Let's try to get this back on track. I'll restate my original question: Why do club companies and consumers focus so much on distance with fairway woods, when those are (to me anyway) "position" clubs to begin with, used to stay short of trouble and keep the ball in play off the tee?

(I know the real answer, it's "money money money," but humor me here.)

First of all, aren't all golf clubs "position" clubs ? Every time we hit a shot with any club we are thinking in he first place where do I want to position the golf ball with that shot.

And then secondary they are all distance clubs as well.

But as far as why the 3W is used to hit long distance shots more often is because most golf courses got longer and most people can't rip their driver far enough to hit irons or hybrids on the longer par 4's.

I think you make a good point. I think that based on your personal game and preference, ALL clubs are positions clubs and they can fit the situation for you how you want. A 3W for me in not a position club off the tee, it is a scoring club to work the ball a certain way and keep it on the short grass to score. It can be different for everyone though.
