From ESPN.com:

Fifty-nine year old Wayne Mitchell from New Tripoli, PA, "owned -- for a few hours, at least -- one of the most famous golf balls in Masters history. He got it Sunday afternoon after Louis Oosthuizen double-eagled the par-5 2nd hole, pulled the Titleist from the cup and, incredibly, underhand-tossed it toward the patrons seated behind the green."

He eventually decided to return the ball to Augusta National officials, who "declined to divulge whatever arrangement was made for the ball."

I'm wondering what you would do if you came upon a historic sports item such as Shrek's double-eagle golf ball. Would you simply keep the ball? Put it on e-Bay? Or would you return it back to Oosthuizen or Augusta National officials? And if you returned the ball, what, if anything, would you demand in return for the ball?

I'll give you three guesses.

This coming from a guy who is a collector and at times a seller. I think the guy made the right move. I am sure he received something worthy in return, be that Masters tickets or a foursome to play golf there. Shrek has only one major to his name and did not even win the tournament, so I would have no problem giving the ball up. Now if that ball was Bubba's and happened to be the ball he hit into the second play-off hole...and I was a Bubba fan I would probably prefer to keep the ball.

As for Shrek giving up the ball...I am not surprised. Most of these tour players are not moved at these feats as we are. A hole in one is great but they don't spend a week celebrating it...or even 2 holes.

I am not moved by them either. Nothing record breaking on that shot. That is why I said I would put it in my shag bag. To each his own though.

Heck even my own ball. On Friday I left a double eagle shot 5 inches short of the hole...tapped in for eagle and kept playing the ball until I lost it. On Saturday I lipped out another double eagle which I was told rolled over the hole and left me with a 6 footer for eagle which I made. I kept playing the ball...retired it after 5 more holes and tossed it into my shag bag.

If I would have made either of those two double eagles I probably would have kept playing the ball. I was talking to my buddy about it today...its funny that I would consider keeping a hole in one ball, but a double eagle ball even though more difficult to accomplish seems less of an event.
