I always find myself trying to have my clubs either all from the same line, think G15 or Sumo or from the same manufacturer. I don't know why I do it it is completely irrational but if I buy a set of say Hogan irons, I am instantly trying to get a Hogan bag, woods, towel, wedge set whatever as long as it all matches. Anyone else get this way?

Yes...I play only the best. Tom Stewart irons...oh I'm sorry the best hickory clubs. Tom Stewart was the Titleist of his day.

Tom Stewart? Can they reshaft those for you at Golfsmith?

btw ... me, the big Titleist guy, is almost surely going to buy a PING G15 3-wood to replace my 975F. Holy cow did that thing feel good today indoors. If it works that well on the range and off a tee, I'll have 13 Titliests and 1 PING in the bag.

Do yourself a favor and don't hit the new PING Anser firged irons. They are amazing and the temptation may be too strong.

Its funny you say that. I usually hit range balls once a year using today's latest technology. It is absolutely too easy hitting forgiving irons.

Then again I can't play both. Three years ago I was a 3 handicap with modern clubs, then I switched to hickory clubs and now I am a 7. I tell you a 7 with hickories feels much better than a 3 with moderns.

1. The PING Anser forgeds look sweet. That's good to hear they perform that well. And thanks for the advice! I'm broke.

2. I bet! If I could make contact with the hickories, I'd think I was something special. Holding a 7 with the wood shafts? Can't even fathom it.

Robert, not only could you do it. I would bet that you could remain a single digit handicap.

While the adjustment takes a while, once you adjust its just golf. Golf with horrible grooves, but still golf. My low round with hickories is actually the same as my low round with moderns...73.

I usually put it this way...
"When I am on with my hickories I can play with anyone. When I am off...I can't play."

And that is the best way I can put it. If you are having a bad day with hickories its tougher than tough. But when you are playing average or great you can't even tell the difference.

If you ever have an interest in trying it I know hickory golfers in just about every state, and probably most countries in Europe.

I'll definitely holler at you when the curiosity becomes too much to take. Hickory shafts have always intrigued me, ever since reading Penick's Little Red Book and learning that golfers didn't practice much back in the day because wood shafts broke more often AND ... hell ... who could imagine having 100 golf balls to hit into a field for somebody else to pick up?

Eventually, I'm going to buy a wood-shafted club. Seems like too much fun not to.

I've been tempted too Lyn. There is a guy that lives here in the Bay Area named Sam that plays the Hickory Tour. He and I played a round together and had a blast talking golf--just the two of us. I thought being a lefty that it would be almost impossible to find clubs, but he assured me there are a few lefties on the tour.

There are lefties on tour and there are left handed play sets. As a matter of fact I believe I know someone who just recently bought a huge collection of left handed hickory clubs...some quite expensive others less so.

Ok, Lyin, here's the dumb question I've been afraid to ask. I'm looking forward to the Hickory Open, but don't want to bust any of your shafts. Does it happen often, especially on our midwestern clay soils?

Gherman -

My rental sets are just about ready to go. I need to take the clubs to a good friend of mine who will put the finishing touches on them.

I have played hickory golf since 2008, and have only broken one shaft and that was my very first round. The experts say that if a shaft has a crack, even one you can't see its going to break. If you put in a new shaft and it survives your first 10 swings its probably good for 50 years.

Now I am not saying that you won't break a shaft in my tournament, but if you do I won't be mad. I just purchased 40 pre-1900 irons and while I believe all have playable shafts with no cracks I will not be able to test them all in time. So if one breaks, just put the pieces in the bag and I will reshaft in for 2012.

Odds are you won't break a shaft.

I hit TaylorMade clubs, with the exception of my trusty Cleveland CG15 60degree. I play whatever ball I have at the time, it varies. currently i have Titleist tour distance, but my favorite ball is Callaway Tour i(Z) and I'm not quite ready to be paying $40+ a dozen yet. My bag is TaylorMade too, but thats only cause my dad bought it for me, old one was a callaway stand bag from costco.

normally when I buy all new stuff I try to get it all from one manufacturer then once I have it i realize that i dont like certain pieces of it. My bag ends up being kind of a mutt. I started with a Taylormade Superfast driver, Burner 3 wood and Burner hybrid, Taylormade tour irons, and Taylormade RAC wedge, the only things that have remained the same are the driver and irons. Now I have take the burner 3 wood out and replaced it with the Tour Edge eXotics 3 wood, Taken the hybrid out and replaced it with a Mizuno MX700 5 Wood, and replace the wedge with a Ping W tour 60* and a Mizuno mp T10 50*, I am a big Taylormade for drivers and Irons but prefer other makers for fairways and wedges.
I do have the taylormade ghost putter to though I love that thing.

OK, I lied.

The Ping G-15 3-wood is very sweet, but turns out the Titleist 910d 3-wood with the Diamana blue shaft is equally very sweet.

Tie goes to the runner for me, and the runner is always Titleist. So I definitely do try to play one brand of equipment.

But at least I gave Ping a shot, right?

I don't play 1 specific equipment manufacturer. I have Nike, Cleveland, Taylormade and Odyssey in the bag right now.

I try to find certain clubs I play well no matter the brand and stick with those.

I absolutely play 1 brand in the set. irons, one brand, woods one brand, wedges one brand. I can usually trust the consistency that way. Plus being a lefty we almost have to take what we can get when we find something decent. Sucks sometimes but it is what it is.

Mizuno all the way! (irons of course)

It all depends what works for you... For myself I have mixed bag. Taylormade driver. Callaway fairway woods, Mizuno Irons, Titleist putter Cleveland wedges. all the same or not...It's more important to get the ball in hole then what name is on your clubs. just follow your gut... if you do not like what is in your bag you will never hit a good shot.
