Is the game of golf really that difficult to master? I mean, all you have to do is hit that little white ball straight, bag a par and shoot even for the day, how difficult is that? Well, I have been playing for roughly 10 years, and still cannot post a good score. I went for about 2 years without playing and then started playing again and now it is like I have never played before. I have not been able to break 90 for the past 2 years and it is so frustrating that I am ready to give the game up.

My stats are as follows: 45 years old. 5'6" tall, 150lbs. Yeah, I am a little guy. My lowest score was a 78 about five years ago and my longest drive was about 295. My average distance with a driver now is 220 to 240 yards and is all over the place. Sometimes dead nuts straight, or a severe left pull and even a big right banana ball slice. My iron shots are just a complete and utter mess. Short irons are sometimes straight at my target, but usually pulled left or pushed right or hit fat and short. I hit so many balls fat and a few thin. My long irons are even worse. All my irons have been cut down 3/4 of inch, lie is standard, mid-size grips. I have no distance with my irons at all. I will hit my 9 iron 125 yards on one shot and then turn around and knock one 135/140 yards. Is age starting to take affect already?

I have watched so many videos, read so many articles, listened to so many different swing tips and tried so many different drills that I am adjusting my swing every week to try something else. I cannot get my self to swing down on the ball with my irons so I usually scoop the ball and when I focus on hitting down to hit the ball first and then divot, I hit it fat.

I have changed my stance, my grip, my speed swing, spine angle, swing plane, head position and feet alignment. I have changed clubs, balls, tee's and occasionally change my frickin underwear in hopes of some good luck. I have videoed my swing and really don't see anything wrong when I play it back. I guess it is time to go see a PGA pro and take a lesson.

I have had people tell me, "man you have a beautiful swing", "O-Really". Then why the hell do I play like an idiot? Am I trying to hard? am I not taking the game serious enough? am I zigging when I should be zagging? "I just don't get it".

They say golf is a billion dollar industry, well, I can attest to that for the amount of money I spend on golf balls every other week to replace the ones I lost. I played on Saturday at a course that I have only played once and shot a 92 and thought, man, if I would have just shaved 3 strokes I would have shot an 89. I played Sunday at my favorite course and bagged a "sweet" 106, "Yippie".

So now what? I guess I just keep limping along until the day comes that I figure it all out.

Here is one scenario that happened on Sunday my favorite course. Hole #1 par 5, 535 yards. Water (lakes) on both sides of fairway. Tee shot was a dead left pull into the left lake, tee up my third shot and "BAM", straight down the middle now sitting 210 out from green. Wait a minute, does that mean I just yacked out a 325 yard drive?, Yeah, okay, yardage must be way off. Shot 4, dog leg right over the right lake (all carry) is a 3 wood straight at the pin, (first time ever that I have made it over with a tee shot and a 2nd shot), but unfortunately that was my 4th shot and I am now about 10 feet from the pin putting for par. Nope, not to be, bagged a bogey. "Love It"

Just keep at it . Don't give up on this great game, it can be so rewarding. The first thing to do is go get that lesson from a pro. The smallest thing that you don't realize you are doing wrong, they can see. one little thing can turn your game in the right direction. I'm 61 yrs old and playing as well as ever, so you have a lot of time. Good Luck with it.

Yeah, I feel better now that I have vented. I started looking around my area for a good reputable instructor but no luck yet. I have a driving range just down the road that I visit frequently where they offer lessons for $40 a half hour. I have seen the way they do there personal lessons and it is by far a PGA professional lesson. I need a lot more than just 30 minutes of someone telling me what I should be doing. I will make a few calls tomorrow to see what i can come up with.

Now here is my next question. What makes a notable professional instructor? A peace of paper acknowledging someone a PGA pro is not enough in my book. If anyone knows of an outstanding instructor around the Port Huron, MI or surrounding area, then please let me know.

Try this link where you can find a PGA pro anywhere in the country.

There's a Golf Tec loctation that looks to be about half an hour from you, just looking at the map. Here's the contact info: Golftec Lakeside‎- more info »
15300 Hall Road, Macomb, MI‎ - (586) 566-7953‎.

You may think I work for them since I'm such a big fan. I don't, I just believe that their technology makes them a great option. I took one lesson years ago from a pro who just watched me swing and told me what he thought I should be doing different. I never trusted it, and never felt he knew what was really happening in my swing just watching me swing at full speed. Sure enough, he never mentioned any of the multitude of flaws the Golf Tec guy showed me the first time I went in. I had concrete evidence that I was doing several things I had no idea were happening during my swing. That made it so much easier to work on changes. The amazing part was that they changed my grip, ball position, stance width, etc, etc, and the first time I played - about a week after the first lesson, with one trip to the range in between - I went out an shot an 85. I was sure I would go back to shooting in the 100's for a while after making so many changes, but the changes they made in my setup were fundamentally sound and I was able to play with them right away. And, like I said before, I dropped to single digits within a few months. If this place is not too far out of your way you should give them a call and ask for a demo of their system so you can check it out. Good luck.

Somebody needs a hug.....welcome to golf.........I think taking a lesson will probably help a great deal........reading books.....watching videos.....sometimes we read to much into what they are saying.....for instance; "swing down on the ball"....well if you take that literally; you'll need a shovel to get it out.....anyway; see a pro; so he can see first hand what you are doing and correct as neccassary.

cogolfer1: I have been to that site before and they only list 5 pro's and the nearest one is a hour and a half away.

Well, another dismal round of golf on Sunday, shot a "102". I had probably hit the worst shots ever. I could not hit anything.

I have scheduled my first meeting with Golftec for this Sunday. According to my playing partner, I have alot of swaying going on in my swing and he says that my alignment to the target is so far off which makes sense because most of my shots end up going right of my target.

So I will strap in to what Golftec has to offer and see how it goes. I have also talked to a PGA pro about a on course playing lesson when I am done with Golftec. I will keep this post updated to let everyone know how it goes.

Jim,

Thanks for sharing your game.
Golf is not a game of perfection and that's why we love it so much.

You have the same issue as I have, lack of practice and aging had put a toll on my golf game also.
In the past couple of years, the results of years of abuse of my body had surfaced. Arthritis in the hands and feet is the least problem I have.
Crisp contact with golf ball is a rare event. Have to shorten my swing to have a decent contact with the golf ball through the hitting zone. I have to limp to shot in the 80's now.
Suggestion for you is, to tune up your equipment and your physical condition.

Make sure at minimum the flex of the golf shafts suits your current condition, eat right and exercise will also help your golf game.

I couldn't wait to get out again, SOON.

I went to Golftec Sunday afternoon for my swing evaluation and what a amazing eye opener I got once I seen the video and listened to the instructor on what was going on during my swing. I was compared side by side with Stuart Appleby and was shown how far out in front of the ball my entire body was during my swing. I don't know if you can see the picture clearly or not as I attempted to enlarge it some so it is a little blurry but you can see the difference as to how jacked up my swing really is (almost like an extreme stack and tilt thing). The extra info you get from having the sensors attached to you really show a lot of detail in your swing, (hip turn, hip bend, hip tilt, shoulder turn, shoulder tilt and ect.) compared to tour player averages is a key point in the entire evaluation.

I scheduled my appointment on Sunday afternoon and ended up being there for 2 hours with the instructor and by the time I was done and he adjusted my swing, I completely changed the way I approach the ball from setup to finish swing. The good thing is that the entire process is video taped and sound recorded and saved on there website so you can go back at any time and watch the videos again and again. With just the one lesson/evaluation, I was able to fix a few different problems with my swing and am glad I went. Thanks withers40 for providing me the info on Golftec.

The price ($165.00) is a little steep but it was worth it to me just from the transformation I received from one visit. There pricing for there lesson packages is just way tooooooo expensive for me so my next step is to take a few more lessons with a pro from a club I have found nearby. I now have a few things that I can work on at home or at the range to continue to improve on.
