I didn't know where to post this, so I thought this may be a good place. I am the chairman of a compliance club here on Stracka, and the topic of club membership has been a hot topic lately between several other chairmen, and I thought it would be good to raise this question to other chairmen and also to the Stracka administrators as their input would really be appreciated.

The comments I have seen are similar in nature, so I thought I would use my club as an example. We have over 350 members registered in the club, and on average, I have been getting anywhere between 4 and 20 members participate in either normal club events and tournaments. We have a tournament next month and only have 17 people confirmed/paid.

Recently, I have been going through the list of people and have already done a couple of things:

1) I removed members that signed up more than 2 years ago, have never played in any club events let alone with other members, and have NEVER posted a score on Stracka. I think this was a pretty safe move.
2) I have identified people who signed up more than a year ago, and have never participated in any event nor have any rounds attested by anyone. Come January 1, these members will be removed from the group for non-participation.

What are other chairmen doing in this area? Also, what is Stracka's stance on not only removing members who do not participate, but also on removing people who have paid Stracka memberships? We as chairmen completely understand they paid to get a handicap, but if they do not participate, why should they even be part of the group? I am definitely not comfortable if any member (paid or free) is participating in a tournament and asks that I attest to his/her handicap if they are not actively involved.

First, go to your club home page. Among the things on this page is the beginning of the list of golfers (lowest handicap indexes first). Just below this list is the words EXPORT TO EXCEL as well as SLOPE and an entry box next to SLOPE.

Click on EXPORT TO EXCEL and it will download a list of your members into an Excel spreadsheet. From there, save it to your computer. Then, when your number changes, download it again ... and compare them side-by-side in Excel. You can find the change that way.

In my saved file, I highlighted those members who have met the USGA requirements and saved those to another file ... thus I know who and how many.

In addition, if you enter a SLOPE in the box before downloading the file, it will figure the handicap for every golfer based on that Slope. Very useful in club events.

Same here, Pete. I check the member list daily and when I see the number change, I compare to my master list. Very simple to do.

How did you identify when a member joined Stracka? I have looked through the list of members in my club and cannot figure out when they joined??

Jim

Being the techy I am, I created a spreadsheet that downloads all members, and then I compare the downloaded list to my master list. I can tell who's new and who's no longer in the club.

Where on Stracka can the list be downloaded from? I am also a pretty savvy computer tech person but did not see an area that allowed us to download files? I do see that watching the number to see if there is a new member might work for some clubs but remember I have 971 members. I sent out a mass email on Friday announcing the new chairman, stating that we would be setting up bi-laws and asked if people would be interested in doing club tournaments next year. So far I have had exactly "zero" response. I did remove about 40 due to being outside the 50 mile radius and sent over 50 emails to people who had no zip code telling them to provide one or risk being removed. Had two responses to that one. A quick look through the membership(if thats possible) showed that approx. 50 had actually posted a tournament round (most being v-tours). This club could be drastically reduced after the first of the year. Not sure how Stracka will like that??

I actually did this a little different. I connected my spreadsheet directly to Stracka, and so every time I open the spreadsheet it downloads the latest list. Then I created a small macro which parses the data and it compares to my master list, and voila. I don't use the export to spreadsheet as I find this way is much faster. Everyone does it differently, so whichever way works for you is all good :-).

I just thought of another enhancement as I'm going through my list of members right now and removing those that have not conformed. In the Member List page, is it possible to add a column that counts the number of rounds that were attested by other club members? I'm guessing the best way to do is it to only include rounds played for the current year.

is this psosible?

I agree with all of the comments posted here. When I stepped up and assumed the role of Chairman, I removed members that were obviously not very active in the club. There were a couple of people that complained about being removed, but it definitely got their attention.

The vTour events are a great idea and I don't know why more people don't participate in them. It seems like it would be a whole lot easier to invite a couple of fellow club members out for an afternoon to play a round rather than organizing a traditional tournament at a single course. At least the vTour tournament rules allow you to pick the course. What better way to stay compliant with the USGA rules and regulations.
