The way the swing should be....

Watching the Masters, and any other tournament for that matter, there is always one consistent factor: Smooth swings. And I'm a victim. I love to hit the long ball. I love hitting wedge when other guys are hitting 8-ion. I love bombing drives way down there and having short irong into greens. I love to overswing. Badly. The fact of the matter is, my scores suffer because I don't play enough to have a razor sharp short game. And thus, when I overswing , I hit the ball off-line. And that is something I can't afford to do if I want to score well.

The winter season.

So waaaaaay up here, I can play golf from about the middle of May to the middle of October. It may vary a little, but that's a pretty good average. It's also not a very long season. Taking a 7 month break has disasterous effect's on one's scores, as we usually start the year off a good 10-20 strokes above our previous season ending handicaps. By the start of June, things are usually coming somewhat back to normal and we can see the difference in the scores. The start of the year however, can have lingering effects on our handicaps if one can't play 20 rounds in any kind of time. I've also found that as I move north, handicaps are generally a little higher. We do have very good courses and facilities and the greenskeepers do an excellent job of avoiding winter kill and the after-effects of a long winter. So I'm thinking the shortened season has lots do do with the geographical handicap gradient. I think I'm moving to Aruba :) The season there is considerably longer....

Ever just lost it?

I'm 30 years old and I'm sitting in my office at my job wondering when or if I'll ever get my clubs out of the basement. I've been playing this game for 25 years. There is something wrong with me, I'll admit. It's not golf's fault. But yesterday, while playing a quiet round by myself, I was 8-over on the 9th tee. I took a look down the hole and thought "I might just make this the last hole of the day" having already paid for 18. I hit my tee ball long and left. Another fairway missed. I went looking for it and after a couple of minutes, stopped looking and walked straight back to the parking lot and left the course. I got home and put my clubs in the basement and turned down a round this afternoon. This was not an isolated incident. Lately, I can't find the sweet spot on my putter, forget a 3-iron. My ballstriking has been so inconsistent as of late, I want to cry. Or break my clubs. I don't seem to care which.
