The key to this photo for me is getting the butt of the club to point inside the ball line. If you accomplish this you will be on plane and in a very strong position.

lost a lot of dexterity and have to keep altering to get into position

As in all good swings, you go AROUND the body. Most recreational players have swings that are up and down, usually because their spine is much too vertical leading to an armsy swing. This is how you do it for power. Note also how Connor has already coked his wrists at this point...and he's only halfway back.
