Which tees do your play from and why?

I'm curious:
1- What distance do you hit your 5-iron on average?
2- What's your average score?
3- Which tees do you play from (more precisely, what's the approx length of the course(s) you play)? 4- Do you feel that it's the right length for you?

I once read an interesting formula to calculate a player's ideal course yardage: Multiply the average distance you hit your 27-degree club (typically your 5-iron) by 36; the total you get is a good distance for you to play from in yards.

So for me, I hit my 5-iron 130 yards, I play a 5,200 yard course (so that would be 500 yards more than the ideal length) and my average score is 91.

I'd be curious to see if you guys play from tees which match your ideal course length and what it means for your score.

A friend of mine told me he just broke 80, which is awesome. BUT... he drives the ball 300 yards, hits his 5-iron 195 and yet plays from the whites (6,200 yard course, 800 yards less than the ideal)! Should I send him play from the back tees from now on? ;)

I hit my 5 iron 175-180 on average. According to that calculation, I should be playing 6300-6480 yards. Most of the courses I play are a little longer than that. My home club is 6799 yards, my "second home" club is 7000 yards from the golds (when I play my modern woods) and 6500 yards from the blues (when I play my persimmon woods).

My average score is 76 at my home club, and 79 at the other club. That score difference, though, is mainly due to much tougher course layout at the second club, rather than length. Tougher greens, elevation changes, more and deeper bunkers, etc.

I hit my modern driver about 265-270 and my persimmon 245-255. That kind of yardage off the tee rarely leaves me with more than a 5 iron in my hands into the majority of par 4s I come across.

My 5 iron is 175 yards

My average score is the mid to ow 80's.

I generally play from tees that are at least 6000, but rarely go beyond 6500.

I honestly think the 5 iron distance calculation means nothing if you can't keep the ball in play. Play from where you're comfortable and not ticking off your playing partners or the group that's constantly waiting behind you.

I hit my 5 iron 175 - 185 yards consistently. I play from the 6500 - 6700 yard tees if they are available that long. I am a 25 handicap but its coming down slowly.

Yes, what club you're hitting on your 2nd shot definitely matters! On the first par 4 at the Challenger, if my friend hits his driver 300 yards from the white tees then he'll only have 85 yards to the green (it's 385 from the whites)! That would be a sand wedge. But if I hit my driver 200 yard, I still have 140 yards to go, so a 4-hybrid (340 from the reds). For sure he has a lot more chances to hit the green :) LOL. I'd need to hit my driver 260 to have a sand wedge to the green!! This is just impossible... He's playing from the wrong tees I think :)

Here goes:
1. I will grab a 5 iron if I am at 190 from the front edge of the green, or about 200 yards. I can hit it farther if I have to but that is why god made 4 irons.
2. My handicap is at 5.3 and dropping. I have been shooting 75 - 78 pretty consistently over the past few months.
3. I play from the back tees 90% of the time.

Now that makes a lot of sense with your distances and abilities! :) And shooting in the 70s from there is a great achievement!

I think you're playing the right yardage. I was just asking myself this question because my friend and I tend to compare our scores. But it's just impossible to compare since he's playing very short courses (6,000-6,200) given the distance he gets with his clubs. You can't compare the performance of someone who always has a short iron or wedge as a second shot on a par 4 to someone who needs to hit a 3 or 4 hybrid! And I'm fairly long... Many women are shorter hitters than me.

5 iron= 220 X 36= 7,920
I play what ever tee box offers the toughest slope, and rating.
Handiacp is 4.8 at the moment.

One thing I have learned is sometimes hitting your drives long off the tee box like I do, can hurt me more often than help. Out here in the desert, there are a lot of ravines, hazzards and what not that I will roll into that seperate landing areas. Having to hit 5wood off tee, or maybe 3 wood.

Nice post, interesting formula as well, I have always played around 6500 yards, I feel comfortable with that yardage, to me it keeps a nice mix of Drives and diferent irons on par 4's, however I have noticed that when I played under 6200 my scores are a little better but I get get bored, it seems like every hole is a driver or 3 wood and a short iron or wedge to the green, I typically hit my 5 iron about 180 to 185, so taking your fourmula it would give me 6588, which is where I would like to be when I play.

Nice post sylla

I hit my 5 iron about 160
Most of the time I play white tees. However I will play blues or reds just to change up the course.
MY avg score is around an 88. However there are times where it climbs in to the mid 90's and has bee as low as 77. Only one time have I ever shot under par for 9 holes -2.

I play anywhere between 6200 and 6500 yards. If the blues fall within there I will play them....I will play longer at times depending on the players I am with or the situation.
That is a great distant for me and I believe most golfers have no business playing any longer then that!
You have to know your ability, the game is hard enough why would anyone want to make it harder by strentching it out futrhter and not give themselves a realistic shot or might I say shots!

I try to select tees that are about 6500 to 6600 yards regardless of the course. The tees need to be appropriate for your ability. For variety, I will vary the tees from time to time. I sometimes play tees that are shorter and once in a very great while I will play longer tess that are approaching 7000 yards. Whenver I play the longer tees (7000 yards), I have to hit lots of fairway woods to the longer par 4's. I have never played any 7200 tees. Can't imagine what that would be like.

My drives average about 245 yards but they can range from 220 to 300 depending on the wind. Yes, I do occasionally crank one out there when the wind is right, but not often. So I try to select tees that offer a challenge but not tees where I can rarely get home in two. Yesterday I played Whitestone in Fort Worth (6615 yards). The wind was really whipping when we got up on top of the ridges. My best hole of the day: I hit my driver on number 15 very solid and hit a low piercing drive that only went about 220 yards dead into the teeth of the wind (dead center of the fairway). I then hit a very solid 5-iron 150 yards dead straight into the wind and onto the green. Drained the 25 foot putt for a nice birdie on the windiest hole I faced all day (probably about 25-30 mph).

I choose tees that I think are appropriate for my ability. It's no fun if you are overswinging, hitting it into the woods, hitting 3-wood out of the rough all day and still can't get home. Whenever I hit it into a bad spot, if I don't have good lie, I try to get my ball back into play at a yardage where I have a good chance of getting it up and down. I have a good short game and it's primarily responsible for my handicap because I drive the ball so short compared to the long knockers. Because I do have a good short game, I will often just try and get an approach anywhere near the green since I am usually very confident in getting it up and down. Of course, I won't play like that if the rough is very brutal. Then I want my ball on the short grass for my approach. I have had days where I have had as many as 12 one-putts.

So pick tees that offer a challenge but also give you lots of chances to be successful. As you do better from one set of tees, move back a little and continue to challenge yourself but don't kid yourself that you should be playing the back tees consistently.

I hit a 5i about 170 wich means 6200 and the courses I play
are in that area. I'm a high handicapper and play from the white tees. I play from the back now and then but the whites fit my skill level better.
