Yes they do. The only way to stop it is to call them. Tricky but effective way to keep the $ coming in.

They do auto-renew, someone at that end must be a hold over from the old AOL days. It is not done without your knowledge however, unless of course you simply didn't read the fine print when you signed up in the first place.

When I renew, I send a very clearly worded support ticket the next day to cancel the auto renew feature on my account. I usually have a reply in a few days. It's never been a problem.

If you look at your "Account" and click on "payments & Transactions" then click on the "Auto Renew" heading it will show if auto renew is on or if it has been canceled. Mine still shows as canceled which is what I did back in 2010.
