Many of us take a wide stance when setting up to hit the driver. A wide stance provides a feeling of a more powerful set-up. Having a extra wide stance can actually can be a detriment to hitting good drives. If your stance is too wide it will not allow a proper weight shift during the back swing and follow thru. The wide stance will tend to get you stuck on your foot and never get the weight forward onto the front foot. This leads to blocked shots or even shots that fly high and away from your target line.. During your next range session,Play around with your width of your stance to promote a good weight shift. A good place to start is to have your feet just outside your shoulders.... Hit it long and straight.

I am curious if shoulder width is truly a measuring stick for all body types and configurations. I appreciate the comment to start there. It seems to me that the width of any individual stance would also be dependent on one's flexibility. Am I off base with that?

What I look for in a stance is stability and feeling comfortable. Width is based on a person feeling athletic in the stance. Too wide a stance (for me) makes it very difficult for getting weight forward and tends to make me keep my weight on the back foot througout the drive. Too narrow and I lose balance. I have come to a stance that is comfortable for me and is a bit less than shoulder width. I have very broad shoulders. The key is balance and getting weight forward through the swing.
