So recently escaped the cold of the Northeast and got to play some golf down south. Grand Cypress in Orlando was one of the most painful rounds I have played in a long long time. My question is;

When do you say something to a person who is violating just about every rule in the book?

Mind you, he had a playing partner who I thought would say something, but never did. Just as a quick summary, he swung and missed at least 3-4 times every tee box, ready golf (cuz we were already 40 min behind by hole 7) meant everyone else play quick and he'll saunter along, putting lines didn't mean anything, had at least eight 6-putts, literally got a 25 on a par 3, stepped on the hole and caved it in, marked his ball by picking his ball off the surface and pushing a 1/2" depression into the ground w/ his finger tip... i could go on, but how many holes of this should I have put up w/ before I stopped biting my tongue.

I would have flipped out before we finished the first hole. Did you play with this person by choice or were you paired up by the Pro Shop?

I would let him know immediately if he was doing that much wrong.

Not worth wasting your breath over. Can't fix stupid. All it would cause is tension between you and him. If it were me, I would go right back to the clubhouse and DEMAND to start my round again with someone else. You paid good money I know for your round and you have a right to be able to enjoy it.
Just another reason why I believe there should be some sort of proof of proficiency before people are turned loose on golf courses.

After about the first hole or two I'm headed back to the pro shop. IMO, if they (the course) pair you with someone, they are responsible for the behavior of all parties. If there are issues within the group they created, they must be part of the solution. I love the game to much to waste my time not enjoying it. I would want a rain check/refund/voucher for the restaurant, etc.

Does the buffoon need a talking to? YES

Is it my responsibility? Maybe, but I'm here for golf, not UFC.

Let the experts called Pro's set him straight.

Tension or no tension, I'd say something as soon as that joker started causing any damage to the golf course.

You know that I wouldnt hesitate to give him a talking to or turn it into a UFC fight if needed.

You could say something, but you cant teach a person who doesn't want to be taught. Being 40 min behind after 7, I would have politely told him that the round was moving too slow and that I was going to play ahead as a single. I'm Out.

Exactly, you work at a course. Your credentials would allow you to address said buffoon at your home course or any course.

I always say something and usually use choice words doing it. I just can't let it lie and I especially don't want to let it ruin my round. I act very sarcastic too so it doesn't come across like me being a dick. Sarcasm is the great equalizer so say something the next time Joe. You can get mileage with "Never quite saw a guy flip a ball out behind a tree like that. You need to teach me that technique on the next hole"

Hey, I played with this guys brother yesterday. He and a friend were both golf morons. He walked on my putting line repeatedly, at one point he actually stood on the hole, he and his buddy stood directly behind me when I hit a shot. At one point, as I prepared to hit my second shot they drove their cart up directly behind me and parked so they could have a good view of the ball. It always annoys me for someone to stand directly behind me when I play a shot. The bafoon would climb into a bunker, take 3 or 4 swings to get it out and then just walk away from the bunker. On his third bunker, I realized that he was not raking the bunkers so I did say something to him. I tried to be non-confrontational by just telling him, "I'll play my shot while you rake your bunker." He took the hint and gave it a very brief rake.

On the greens the moron would putt four times, end up six inches from the hole and then walk up to tap it in and MISS! They stretched what is ordinarily a 3-1/2 hour round into a five hour round. Man,it turned out to be a long day on the course.

Two separate questions here - if he's damaging the course, leaving big spike marks across putting lines, and making no effort to pick up the pace, then something needs to be said. And I have no problem with that something being as mean and/or sarcastic as is necessary to get the point across. For those wanting to avoid confrontation, just pull out your cellphone and call the pro shop - I've played at Grand Cypress twice and always got the vibe that the staff there wouldn't put up with that $&!t.

HOWEVER, if he's just violating rules, why does it matter? I don't care if he swings and misses on every tee box, I don't care if he kicks the ball out from behind trees, and I certainly don't care what he writes on his scorecard (if he even has one). I doubt a guy like that keeps a handicap, and if "cheating" makes the game more enjoyable for a beginner and keeps him interested in the game of golf, then he can learn the rules as he learns the game and eventually get better at everything. Not saying that was the case this time - I'm just sayin'.

I have had this happen several times and have asked them to pick up after snow man has been reached. I also encourage them to T the ball up on every swing until they get better. If they are obnoxious about suggestions I ask to play ahead as a single.
