Now that the handicap season is over for some of us, were you able to accomplish any goals you may have set at the beginning of the year? What will you work on during the off season?

Goals I Accomplished for 2013:

1. Practice daily. I did/do practice daily whether it is hitting balls in my garage or at the driving range as well as Putting and chipping practice
2. Improve handicap. Lowered handicap from a 21 to a 14 in one season.
3. Break 90. Shot several rounds in the 80's
4. Improve equipment. Replaced shafts in my driver, 3 wood and 3 hybrid with Tour SPX certified fitted shafts.
5. Keep track of all statistics during each round. I did record 90% of my statistics to see what needed to be improved.

Goals I Did Not Accomplish:

1. Exercise. I started doing a exercise/band routine in January but stopped when the season began.
2. Take lessons. I struggle with this as I have yet to find a pro that I feel is truly qualified to actually do me any good.
3. Break 80. I had one good round going to actually break 80 but fell apart on the last 5 holes.
4. Win the member/guest invitational. Finished in second place in our handicap flight.
5. Improve putting strokes to 25 putts per round. Although I improved, I still 3 putted several times or 2 putted for a bogey instead of par. Best round was 30 putts.

During the off season I will continue to practice daily but need to focus on chipping and putting. Develop an exercise routine to improve flexibility, balance and core strength.

I didn't accomplish a single goal that I set at the beginning of the year. I attribute that to not playing nearly as much this year as I did last year for a variety of reasons. But I looked, I got out 63 times last year (9 holes and 18 holes), this year I've gotten out 41 times, and if I play anymore this year, it's going to be twice at the most, and that's assuming Rocky Mountain weather doesn't interfere.

But here are the goals I set for myself.

-Shoot even par or lower on a regulation course in 18 holes
-Get handicap to 1.4
-Average 1.7 putts or less per hole
-Hit 80% of fairways
-Hit 50% of greens
-Get up/down 50% of the time
-Make 50 birdies
-Make 5 eagles
-Make 500 pars
-Qualify for state high school championship in October

One by one...

-I shot even par or lower twice during 9 holes, but I couldn't put it all together for 18. Closest I came was +3, but a +2 from 2012 remains the closest I've come.
-I got it to 5.8 late in the summer, now it's projected to fall to 6.9.
-1.8.
-58%.
-35.2%.
-25.3% (stat I'm most disappointed in for this season).
-32.
-0.
-304. (With those last 3, I attribute that to not playing much more than any other stat).
-Didn't even make the team.

I had my goals set really high because that's how I go through life in general. I give myself difficult objects to shoot for, but I expect to meet them. If I don't, then I've just got to get better.

That unfortunately is a common problem Jim. IMO there aren't good standards for becoming a golf instructor. But don't let that keep you from the quest to finding a good one. They are out there.

Made most of them. Still a lot to be done!

I realize the 2 and 3 year goals are "lofty" but you have to dream it to achieve it!

I only have one goal for my golf game, and that is to not let it start going south.I dread the day when I can't play at the same level that I play now. I started the year with a 12.9 handicap and finished at 12.8. Goal accomplished.Durning the year I got as low as 11.4 and as high as 14.4 The lowest index I have ever had was 9.6 and that was many years ago,so Im hanging in there.

Don't use # of putts as a goal; it is the worst stat there is to measure good putting or bad putting. If I have a round where I have 27 putts, it means my ball striking was horrible for the round. Make a good goal, under 2 for Putts per GIR. You will see good scores coupled with hitting that goal.

Your distance will decrease over time, but your accuracy should get better. My 86 year old father in law has amazingly soft hands around the green. A blast to see him chip. I'm not sure of your age but don't be ashamed to move forward a tee box as needed. Enjoy the game!!

Distance is not a problem Vince. I can hit the ball as far as I ever have. It's just that my game hasn't gotten any better in the last 4 or 5 yrs. so now it's just a matter of maintaining the game I have. hopefully I can keep it where it's at for a good number of yrs. yet. By the way I'm 64. Not ready for the golf grave yard for a while.

Hopefully your age means you will have more time for golf over the next few years. The retired guys I play with in the MGA at my club play 3 or more times a week. They know every inch of the course, all the breaks on the greens, and where not to hit the ball. They whoop me on a regular basis and I can, and normally do, out drive all of them.

...Until you match it up side by side with your GIR and proximity stats. This year I averaged 32.3 putts/round, my proximity to the hole was 27.6 feet, and I hit 35.2% of greens in regulation. Last year I had 33.1 putts/round, my proximity to the hole was 26.3 feet, and I hit 33.9% of greens in regulation. Clearly, I putted a lot better this year than I did last year.

I realize that but if I "set" my goal high enough and give me something extremely hard to work on then I will be very happy if I can shoot one round with 28, 29 or 30 putts, Goal Accomplished.

Good luck with it. Allways good to aim high.

Set your goal at 2.0 Putts per GIR and you will not only hit your goal with some effort, but feel good about the result. You could go out tomorrow and shoot 10 over your handicap and miss every GIR and get it up and down for 28 putts.

I'm not trying to be a buzz kill Jim, but set a goal that makes you feel good about hitting it. 2.0 putts per GIR is very solid goal; you will be a better putter, I promise.

Played about 35 rounds this year and only had 3 of them that I was really satisfied with. I had really thought I'd do much better than I did this season. Still want to get the handicap under 20 and keep it there. For right now I think that's the only goal I'm really focused on.

I think I got to witness one of those???
